David Lynch and Angelo Badalamenti: The Twin Peaks Archive

So, DavidLynch.com is regularly adding to this online archive of previously unreleased Twin Peaks score music. I've got a version with about 130 songs, but it is growing all the time. You're either a fan or not I would suppose at this point. Nothing you wouldn't expect, but I'm enjoying it. Probably will eventually become a staple of driving in the middle of the night.

Sleigh Bells: Reign of Terror

One of the first of my highly anticipated discs for 2012 and I'm not disappointed. Slightly dialed down from the debut. Somehow not quite as catchy yet more melodic. I think they did a great job of sticking with their instantly identifiable sound while still changing things up noticeably. I'll be playing this one frequently.

I need to check that out, waiting for my usual source to offer up some FLAC files before I download though. I liked the 12" they did with Massive Attack last year and I'm sure this will be solid, but I'd like a full length now. Any word on if that's coming anytime?

Roy Orbison: Mystery Girl

Anyone going back and digging up old Roy Orbison records does themselves no favors if they skip his grand finale. Is it 'classic' sounding Roy or a late 80s pop record out of time? Hard to say, but Roy is in excellent voice throughout and the material is the equal of damn near anything he had to work with and doesn't sound at all dated. The bouncy single You Got It is always worth a listen, but if you want the more moody Roy, go for tracks like She's a Mystery to Me (one of the best songs Bono and the Edge ever wrote) and more. Outside his early Monument stuff, this is as good as he ever sounded and after you've played all those songs a few hundred times each something fresh hits the spot. Timeless.

I argue with nothing that you have said about Roy's voice. But the thing that kills that Roy record for me is the heavy-handed Jeff Lynne production.

I really don't mind the touch of production sheen. Roy's records have always been heavily produced. His early stuff was very much studio state-of-the-art for its day so that he would release something pretty slick isn't at all surprising. I won't say I think the production is perfect on this one, but it's not distracting enough for me to not fully enjoy the record.

We just got the amazing WAMU here in town. They play 24-hours of classic bluegrass and country. Really incredible stuff. Well-read DJs who the know the genres and bring in their own music. It streams online at bluegrasscountry.org. So, needless to say I've been in an old-time music kick lately.

I think it's not so much that it's heavily produced so much that it's Lynne's heavy hand. I just don't like his style. Every album that he produces sounds like "A Jeff Lynne Record" and not like whoever it is whose name is on the cover. I have the same issue with Daniel Lanois.

Lynne actually only produced 3 of the songs on the album.

Then those are the ones that I heard and I should go back and try to listen to it again after 20 or so years.

Yeah he did You Got It, the single, which I like OK but I don't at all consider the best of the bunch on the album.

I've moved onto this. Heard The Hackberry Ramblers' "Une pias’ ici, une pias’ la bas" played this morning and really dug it. Exploring more.

Walter Daniels & Guadalupe Plata

All covers EP from this Spanish blues punk outfit. They run through tracks from Suicide, The Gun Club, Hound Dog Taylor and Frankie Lee Sims. Fans of The Gun Club should dig the shit out of these guys. Go download it for free (name your price) at Bandcamp. They have several releases available there worth checking out as their original material is excellent as well.
