This. Tho I might've swapped Soundgarden and AIC.

maybe classified as punk but anyone remember the fastbacks? i love mark arm projects mudhoney and green river. from the list i selected nirvana - the recent release of the halloween & reading recordings has helped their stock climb, but as already mentioned their sound seems the least dated & still incredibly accessible. if soundgarden only released their first two albums i might plug them in the top spot. outside of the mtv buzz bin hits i never really bothered with alice in chains. same goes for screaming trees with nearly lost you & crown of thorns. i respect PJ for their longevity (& i've been pleasantly surprised with EV's solo output), but i stopped paying attention to the band about five records ago.

Was never a huge Alice In Chains guy. Which is kind of surprising because it's some dark ass shit.

At the time I probably would have defaulted to Pearl Jam - at various times Ten, Vs., and Yield have meant a lot to me. I fucking HATE Vitalogy and No Code. Blech x 1 mil.

"In Bloom" is the best song of this entire era, and I agree with Chuckles that In Utero is a BEAST.

And I'm with Rogneeb - Soundgarden can eat a dick.

Nirvana, just because of Unplugged and In Utero. Nevermind is a solid album, but pretty overplayed at this point.

I love all of these bands for different reasons....

Facelift and Dirt are by my favorite two from all the bands...
Ten holds so many personal memories for me...
Down on the Upside by SG is so underrated and probably my favorite from them.
Screaming Trees and Mark Lanegan 'Dust' was a great follow up to their 'hit having' record. and it doesnt hurt that Mark and greg Dulli are BFF's right now.
and Nirvana, despit being overplayed and will continue to be overplayyed on radio, have written maybe 25 of the greatest songs of all time....

as for the vote, I'll say AIC.

You must love 'Hail Hail' though. I used to have that on every other mix.

It's funny how much I used to enjoy Soundgarden but I can't abide it now for more than 55 ms.

Yes. If you guys have never watched HYPE!, then its worth a viewing. It interesting to hear various musicians from the era verbally dissect the scene and what it became.

On the same token, I really loved me some Olympia/K Records/Int'l Pop Underground stuff in high school. That was my bread and butter. Beat Happening. Bikini Kill. Mecca Normal. Crabs. Lois. Some Velvet Sidewalk.

This record stayed in constant rotation at least twice a day for like 3 of my 4 years of high school:

Which, coincidentally was recorded the same year that Nirvana broke. 91.

Soundgarden was the first "Seattle band" I got in to, when Louder Than Love came out. I'm not really sure how I feel about them now: I'm pretty sure I haven't actually played one of their records in years but I could probably make a quick Tenner/playlist that would entertain the fuck out of me for an hour. I'm also pretty sure that listening to "Beyond The Wheel" at absolute top volume accounted for 12% of my hearing loss.

If all the music that came out of Seattle in the late eighties and early ninties was to be destroyed but I was able to save one track for the ages I would save 'Burn It Clean' by Mudhoney.

Therefore Mudhoney get my vote except they're not on the poll.

Nirvana, but I hardly ever listen to it anymore. Kurt Cobain's musical tastes were my guideposts to music when I was young, and he had really good taste. I discovered Sonic Youth, The Vaselines, Pixies, etc. etc. because he always gave credit to everyone he listened to.

I was in college and then med school at the UW from '85-'93 during this heyday in Seattle and appreciate them all. I saw many of these bands live and I must say I'm partial to Mudhoney and Love Battery. Of these 5, I voted for Nirvana.

he was also a tour guide for me as well, too bad he had such terrible taste in women and drugs.

Yeah, exactly. I like Hole a lot, but I really can't stand Courtney Love.

AIC were boring. So was PJ. Screaming Trees had a nice grungy sound but the songwriting wasn't catchy enough for my tastes. Nirvana and Soundgarden had that mesh of hard rock and pop that I really enjoyed.

I would have Pearl Jam ranked higher than Soundgarden or Mudhoney today, but I would have had Mudhoney at the top of the list back in the day. Nirvana and AIC would have fluctuated in the list, but never reached the top.

Sorry, but I call bullshit on everyone saying Mudhoney on top of all these bands.

I only really got to this from hearing The Bloor/Busty/Squirg Band cover it. Mark Boston is a dude who can make this sound as good or better than Pearl Jam, then turn around and melt panties by singing Prince.

Also - no mention of the best thing to come out of the early nineties twin obsession with Seattle/Big H and LA Gangster rap: THE JUDGEMENT NIGHT SOUNDTRACK?

Say what you will, but I was late to the game on the Seattle scene and coming from a Punk music background. Touch me I'm sick was the first single from that area that I truly enjoyed.
