"As a Christian" I can tell you that no one in my church (Grace Cathedral, San Francisco), a church that has served and protected Christendom for centuries, no one would dream of voting for the ex-senator from Pennsylvania.

Gar posted a great article on twitter this morning, and pretty much summed up a lot of what I've been thinking. Once this is a 2-horse race, each party will unify under the candidate regardless of what their platform/ideas/etc are.

not if one of those crazy repubs runs as an independent...or if Santorum or Paul get the nomination (unlikely), they can kiss the undecided/ moderate voters goodbye

I would like to think the GOP learned from Bush/Gore when Nader stepped in and siphoned off votes from Gore. If one of those GOP candidates that doesn't get the nom runs independent they really are hurting their cause.

Ron Paul is the only GOP candidate left that would/should make a run as a third party candidate. He has the same sort of youth backing as Nader, and allegedly believes in being a disruptive force in this election cycle to promote his brand of libertarianism.

Ron Paul is a creature of the Party, particularly now that he has his son's standing to worry about. Had Rand lost KY Senate in 2010, though, I think a Ron Paul independent run would have happened. Now? Not so much.

Also, the fear with Paul, unlike Nader (contra Ol' Ralph's claims of "Nader Republicans" in 2000), is that RP would pull almost as much from Obama as R-Money.

As it is, there's still a former Republican office-holder in the Libertarian field -- Gary Johnson. He's a nutter, but not a RWNJ. Bit of an hypocrite, too. Former New Mexico Gov, New Mexico being a client state of the Dept of Energy, & son of two public sector workers, but GJ is all like, "Privatize it!"
