is that 18 yr jameson noticeably different?

It's a bit more complex with definite barrel aged and caramely/toffee taste. To me, Jameson, in general, is pretty smooth drinking. It was a gift from a friend who knows I like Irish whiskey, so no complaints, but I can't say it's really worth the extra $50+ you have to spend on the bottle.

Excellent call, Jerkass.

Try laying off the lime and adding a pinch of nutmeg in one. Used to drink at a bar that did that, always thought it was a nice addition.

Not a fan of the nutmeg. Makes it taste like a spiced rum. Seems like a fitting garnish. But it's all just bad flashbacks for me.

Need that pure pure sugar cane sugar molasses with a clean equivocal bite...Goslings is not that, although good for a mixer.

So far the Barbancourt 4/8 yr and Appleton Estate 8 yr deserve repeat purchases.

My wife made some homemade Kahlua that's been sitting for a month waiting to be ready. It's finally time to crack it open so I made a White Russian

She's a stay at home mom, so she's got time on her hands to think of these things. She's making Yogurt next (not exactly sure why).

I know a few Indian dudes that swear by making their own over purchasing anything else.

So I was reading that the Barbancourt is made from sugar cane juice as opposed to leftover molasses.
Clearly the difference from any other rums I've consumed.
Which brought me onto the topic of another cane juice spirit: cachacas -- the "rum" of Brazil.
Velho barreiro is the most commonly referenced. Anyone have any insight into this stuff?

Loogs may remember the names of the stuff but it was several years ago...We were eating at August in New Orleans and did a mini-tasting with some high, high end Brazillian stuff. I thought they called it rum but it may have been cachacas.

Not sure if I've ever had that or not. I know I've never bought a bottle of it.

Leblon is the best of the widely available cachaca in the U.S. but it's more of a mixing one than a sipper.

I used to drink dark n' stormies a lot. There are only two black strap rums - that goslings and cruzan makes one too. I wouldn't say one is any better than the other but they do taste slightly different. If you get sick of goslings, try the cruzan for a while. I used to alternate.

Another good black strap drink is the corn n' oil which is basically black strap rum + falernum + bitters. I can't remember the exact ratio but it's easy enough to find a recipe online.

Other rums I like:

Smith & Cross Pure Pot Still
Zaya Gran Reserva
10 Cane

Two months of rum tasting and I'm out of coke, limes, ginger ale and tonic for the moment. I'm getting back to an old sorority standard: red bull vodka mixed with this:

I can't say I'm a huge vodka snob, but this stuff straight up or with a mixer is perfection. Stoli's dry character is still better in a vodka tonic but given the price and quality of Tito's, there's no reason to buy anything else from here on out. This shit is even smooth at room temp and they sell it here in MN at Sam's Club for $15/bottle.

I'll second the Tito's love. I can get it for cheaper than Stoli - and it seems as good or better to me - depending on the drink.

I got a good deal on some bottle of Hangar 1 through a tasting event we had. Of course they fucked up and didn't give me the bottle of the chipotle spiced, and so now I have 2 of these:

and one each of:

and

I can't imagine how the fuck this will all get drunk. But look for a bump of this thread six months-nigh and me posting "Ohg. We drank it all"

Just had some of this homemade kahlua over Easter someone gave my father-in law. It was pretty good as far as that goes. Can't say I go ou tof my way to drink kahlua type drinks though.
