Hello friends,

Unfortunately, I come to you all with some sad news.

It's time for me to move on to the next great thing, whatever that may be.

I want to thank each and everyone of you, with my whole heart for your overwhelming kindness and support over the years. You are the greatest fans in the world! You really do amaze and inspire me. I can't express how much you all mean to me. Your rock solid encouragement has carried me through, many nights. I have been so lucky to have had the chance to meet and talk with so many of you. Your stories and passion are so incredibly inspirational to me.

I am, without a doubt, not done. I will have a website up and running very soon so that we can keep in touch. I have a whole lot left to say and do, and I can't wait to hear what all of you are up to. This is very difficult, so I'll leave you with this... for now...

Thank you all so much!

Safe travels and Happy Holidays to you all!

See you soon somewhere...

All my love,
Shonna

Well, I've always been in Camp Shonna and loved all her contributions.

That said, the band, IMO, clearly needs a shot of energy and a fresh approach. I was lukewarm at best on "Go Go Boots".

The meat drapes had turned to leather....it was time for her to go.

I hope now we'll get a Director's Cut of 'Secret To A Happy Ending' to find out why they really kept her when Isbell left. I'm guessing it was a type of indentured servitude. Aka, they occupied her like Poot from the Wire would have.

There are rumblings on the board as to what really went down, but everyone is keeping a safe, and polite distance on the topic.

She was apparently part of the reason the band went in the direction its recently went in, so we'll see if they RAWK it back up.

This kinda comes at a good place though. After the NYE and Homecoming shows, they are taking a break, recording, and heck, maybe we'll see another mega-tour at the end of 2012. Who knows. They deserve a break.

So are they just saying there's more to the story or are there implications of Hell's Angels' parties and the like?

Haha, no Hell's Angels stories...yet. People that make assumptions are pretty quickly shot down or told to shut it. They run a tight ship over there :)

I know he's been touring solo but not sure what happens if/when he/they record a new album.

One off project: Patterson Hood and Downtown 13

Patterson wrote a song called "After It's Gone" to protest a massive Walmart development that would be put up right near the heart of downtown Athens right on the river in some greenspace. He brought it some heavy hitters for the songs: Mike Mills, members of Widespread Panic, members of the Futurebirds, David Barbe, among others.

They recorded it , made a video, and Patterson performed the song on the roof of the Wuxtury Records store in downtown Athens to draw publicity to the issue.

Here is the video and the live performance:

For any Athens folks, check out the main video. All shots in and around Athens. Pretty cool IMO. I wish more people and places were this involved in their community.

Here's the website for the project:

Athens still hates sprawl. Flagpole has been talking about it since I've been aware of its existence.

Subtlety is no one's strong suit in that collaboration. About as "good" as that new Springsteen song.

I saw them last Saturday, and well... I can't tell if I missed Shonna or not. I will tell you that overall, the show was flat to me with some great highlights. Bobby Keys & the Suffering Bastards were the real highlight of the night. They played all covers, but were tight and every musician was playing with fervor.

This Nashville SCENE review seems like they saw a different show: http://bit.ly/wagwda, but I guess I have a deeper point of reference for which to compare having seen them 20+ times over the last 12 years.

highlights for me where: Uncle Frank, Daddy Learned to Fly, Buttholeville, A World of Hurt, Women Without Whiskey, Hell No I Ain't Happy

Due to a bout of tired wife syndrome, we left after Let There Be Rock

here's the recording of it, so judge for yourself: http://www.archive.org/details/dbt2012-02-11.mk4v.flac16

That's a pretty awesome run of songs. Good also to see Girls Who Smoke back. Some friends from the DBT board were there and had a song dedicated to them. They were beyond pleased.

Barbe is much tighter and attacks songs harder. It'll be interesting to see if he hits the road on this next leg.

Looks like Matt Patton of the Dexateens will be hitting the road on bass for DBT on this upcoming leg. Pretty good fit, imo--though as Patterson's message says, its not a permanent one.

Patterson's 3rd solo is confirmed. Barbe played on it. Expect during these times off for there to be a Patterson tour (this is me thinking out loud).

Bass replacement not gonna be rushed. Barbe apparently already signed on to play on the next DBT record, "which we are not starting any time soon". Hmmm.

Was hoping to hit up the Charlottesville date, but its 3 hrs away, and only one-night so not gonna happen.

Wow.

I love what they're doing, but that song is teddible. Like, unable to make it all the way through teddible. So that video is crazy - I'm all of 60 seconds into it and I recognize people in the crowd, which is strange, because I've been gone a looooong time. Hey Flying Rabbit, remember those Star Room Boys shots I posted?

So in this shot, dude with the hat and bandana is Frank Mason:

...ie, this guy singing:

Glad to see he's still around and kicking. The guy with long blonde hair behind him up against the tree looks like Kevin O'Neil, who was REM's office manager and a helluva nice guy. The green awning in the background was Cookies & Co, where I worked every day for about 6 years. REM's office was directly above us, the second story of half that block, starting with the tan building and going right through the brick. Incredible space up there.
