The ranking is open to debate (I consider their last two equal or superior to Further West), but the mystery is why some people here ever liked them. For me at least (and this is subject to change as I've only listened once), it just struck me as too...slick or something. On the last record, the horns were a great addition but the guitars were still raw and there was real drama on a lot of the songs. There were a few songs towards the end of the record that hinted to this new one though which I can only describe as "late period Stones lazy guitar riffs, too much horns mixed too high and really, really bad lyrics"

To say they didn't change their approach, just learned to write a better song is absurd: Adding horns, using different producers, singing in a different style and yes, writing better[sic] songs is "changing your approach"

This is sort of what I was going to add last night though I was too tired to write it and it wouldn't have sounded as good.

I like this new album, but I also understand where those of you who don't are coming from. Today's A/V Club review (B-) sums it up nicely...

Thanks man. I picked up my hard copy on Tuesday.

Only had time for one run through so far and already thought it was better than the S/T (which was my #1 from that year).

Dude. I like Elvis Costello and the Clash too, but event they mixed it up on a full length more than this. Listen to ten seconds of every song, the tempos are 80% the same, same keys, same range, same instruments, same everything -- just too homogenious for me. Couldn't think of a cooler / dumber word for that. Too same-y.

Try this one FT. I'm liking it so far. I'm a big fan of samey, but this switches it up a little more than Squirggle dismisses it as being. It's got a pulse unlike most of the Shins new one.
