Brownsville Station: School Punks

Yeah, it's the Smokin' in the Boys Room guys, but this isn't that album. This is the followup where they try to cash in on that song by recording a whole albums worth of juvenile delinquent themed garagey rock 'n' roll. Nothing spectacular but good fun and pretty much exactly what you'd expect if you have heard their biggest hit and then looked at this album cover.

Really liking this. Bears a minor resemblance to the band the title references on a few tunes.

Ian Martin: Mechanical Rain

This is a really good experimental/drone/ambient release. I was previously unfamiliar with Ian Martin, but will absolutely have my ears open for that name from now on. One of my favorite releases of this ilk for a long time. Vinyl only release but you can click the pic to listen online. Nice screen-printed sleeve and good pressing make this one worth grabbing for vinyl fans.

Eagerly anticipated, and enjoying immensely.

Chuck Prophet: Temple Beautiful

I know a lot of people here are already all over this one and for good reason. if you're wanting a traditional rock album you'd be hard pressed so far this year to find a better one than this. I was a Green on Red fan way back when (their No Free Lunch EP is still one of my all time favorite EPs), but I've not kept up too much on Chuck's solo work, which is probably a big oversight on my part listening to this release. Just great catchy rock with a bit of a rootsy edge and a hint of gravel to it. Really great stuff. Vinyl on it's way. Probably need to go check him out live on Thursday.

Had no idea he was coming to town. I saw him last time he was here and I really enjoyed it. Seemed like there were only 30 people at OB that night, though.

Yeah, I missed him last time, hoping I'll be up for a weekday show this time around. After Mighty Diamonds in town last night, I'm in a bit of a reggae mood. Besides, it is a beautiful day to spend smoking with the windopws open and this on the turntable....

Tommy McCook: Dubbing with Horns

Fine selection of vintage cuts from the vaults of founding Skatalite, Tommy McCook. Includes 14 versions of classic rhythms lead by Tommy's Tenor Saxophone and featuring an allstar line-up of The Aggrovators, Soul Syndicate and Sly And Robbie, all dubbed-up by Bunny Lee. Great flat, quiet pressing on Jamaican Records. The label has been releasing a slew of great classic reggae and dub titles of late. Packaging is pretty bare bones, but especially for this previously hard-to-come-by stuff the sound and pressings are really great.
