If you had asked me this a week ago, I probably would've come up with a list of 4 or 5 songs, and 3 of them would have been Song:ohia / Magnolia Electric Co. songs. But i've just discovered the MEC Hard To Love A Man EP - and "31 Seasons In The Minor Leagues" just shot to the the top of the list. Great song if you just feel like a major fuckup and want to wallow in it. Hell, just a great song.

As a sidenote for Molina fans, this EP is pretty killer overall. You've got "Hard To Love a Man" from the What Comes After The Blues album, which is a solid tune, then a great cover of "Werewolves of London", plus "31 Seasons" and another killer track called "Doing Something Wrong" + 1 more. It's worth picking it up just for "31 Seasons" and "Doing Something". I've always been leery of MEC EP's because Molina has been so prolific, I figured the EP's that surrounded the albums were full of filler. Lesson learned.

There have been a ton of them over the years, but I always go back "Please Please Please" by the Smiths - reminds me of Duckie in Pretty in Pink throwing cards into his hat listening to this song.

Most of the Smiths' catalog. If I had to pick one, it'd be "Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me."

Another good one: The Divine Comedy - "If I Were You (I'd Be Through With Me)"

I think my adolescent pity party self would choose Edie Brickell's Circle of Friends. but I do have to agree with ole Bobbo. There's hardly anything better for wallowing in your own self-loathing than an RHP song.

The first song that popped into my head was "No Moon on the Water" by Magnolia Electric Co., so I guess we're on the same page.

Another vote for The Smiths, but:

Smiths? Live?

Makes me think of Klosterman's predictions for 2012 at Grantland. His top eleven included the Smiths re-uniting for a show at a Mexico City football stadium & playing to 150,000 screaming Latinos.

If this happens, I will... jizz... in... my... pants.

Yeah, Jason Molina is definitely my go-to for this. I'll just put on Didn't Rain. "Blue Factory Flame" if I need to cut to the chase.

also Neil Young - "Motion Pictures"

the lazy answer would be townes van zandt's waiting around to die or just about 3/4 of his work. another lazy answer might be nick drake tunes. i like me some bird and april in paris seems like a nice party favor for some dirty junk & a soft cry. i could think of sad tunes by john lee hooker & lead belly too. delta blues?
