RE: the Wolfpack -- Valvano left major infractions in his wake at Iona & State, & sure, he got a title out of it, but so did Tarkanian, between Fresno & UNLV. But, where Tark is acknowledged a sleaze -- gloriously so, in that, but I think only LooGAR agrees with me on that -- Jimmy V is an esteemed (late) member of the coaching fraternity.

It's not just the tragedy of his death, of course. East coast bias plays a big role, Valvano the fast-talking NY Italian, Tarkanian the towel-biting Central Valley hick. But, honestly, they're the same guy.

I agree, I think Illinois takes the prize pick for those looking to coach in the Big Ten and then Nebraska gets to pick from the leftovers or make a head scratching pick.
The lack of a Basketball culture is the only thing that is really holding the Nebraska back at this point. They opened a state of the art basketball facility this year and will have a new arena to play in by 2013,
There is a rumor that Osborne and the University are opposed to the recruitment of AAU players, an asinine policy that which will most likely drive most of the good coaches away and insure that the program remains subservient to football.
I'm just hoping that the boosters who helped the program cut a big check to Sadler for severance pay, demand that the next coach gets full support from the AD to recruit and host AAU camps, since they are allegedly opening up the pocketbook for this one and trying to buy a young coach.

AKA The single biggest obstacle any program ever faces?

Welcome to the state of Georgia basketball and we even live in a hot bed of high school talent.

If you guys figure out the secret, we'd LOVE to know what it is.

I'm not sure what is worse, having to deal with Tech who tends to field a decent football team, but has a basketball tradition or dealing with Creighton, a Jesuit University that has no Football program, so they put most of their money behind a mid-major basketball program.
It doesn't help matters that all the best players from this state go play for rival schools or are ignored by the Husker coaching staff and help schools like Colorado State make the Big Dance.
If the Women's Basketball team sucked at Nebraska their wouldn't be much of an issue, but the 2010 squad won the Big 12 title and advanced to the Sweet 16, and all of the other sports here have had some success or contended for a National title.
Nebraska and Northwestern are the only two BCS conference schools to never win an NCAA tournament game. Once one of those schools finally succeeds in winning one, the other should simply get rid of their basketball program.
I'm pretty sure all the basketball supporters in Nebraska are originally from Kansas.

Northwestern has the edge, here, since Carmody has its program further along than Nebraska's.

I too would give a slight edge to Northwestern, but I wouldn't count the Huskers out
The Wildcats might be further along, but they have yet to make the Big Dance in their history. As crappy as Nebraska has been in the history of their basketball program, they have six tournament appearances and won a Big Eight tournament title in 94. They also have a history of bouncing back after a losing season and at least making a run at an NCAA Appearance, but usually end up in the NIT.
Carmody is 60 and might retire soon, and the Wildcats lose John Shurna and are dealing with poor facilities. He's also been there 12 years has and failed to lead a team to an NCAA appearance, most coaches at Nebraska get about six years to do that before they are fired or resign.

At least in terms of State, Valvano took on too much when he became AD in addition to his role of basketball coach in the late 80s, in addition to taking on some highly regarded recruits who were questionable academics-wise (cue Shackleford's "amphibious" comment in regards to having full use of left and right hands). My impression is that it was more like a lack of institutional control rather than anything overtly malicious on Valvano's part. Players simply weren't monitored properly and didn't go to class or sold shoes and tickets for cash.

Jimmy V's esteem is largely due his charisma on the court (obviously in large part due to the 83 team) as well as his short time at ESPN after he was ousted. Maybe him and Tark are more common than different (I honestly know very little about Tark), but Tark lacks that charisma that Valvano had in spades.

this is preposterous, Nebraska is barely a D1 school in basketball, especially compared to the rest of their conference. they should be looking to pilfer schools like Georgia, Gallaudet and the Little Sisters of the Poor instead of targeting coaches at schools that actually care.

Down goes Sparty and the Big Ten tonight. My bracket is officially busted with MSU going down. I knew I shouldn't have committed to this contest this year, but I couldn't resist the aura of free CD's.

Mother Fuck!

What a great game though...Bo should have called a timeout and set something up for that last play. Down one point they needed to get some penetration and a kick or try and get a foul at the basket...not fire up a three from 30 feet. I may be biased, but that was the best game of the entire tournament. Two contrasting styles that both played great games, Syracuse talent won out over the Wisconsin system.

Life is all about balance. Lupe Izzo > Karen Sypher, ergo Louisville will have to defeat State to square Pitino's & T. Izzo's ledgers.

Great games tonight. A tough reality tonight. UNC can't do it without Marshall.

If the Hoosiers pull this miracle off I may have a shot in my bracket pool.

I was hoping for a KU win almost as much as a UNC loss. Fuckleberry Hound ass Roy Williams.

Tim Miles of Colorado State is the new Nebraska Basketball coach. The good news is that he actually does a good stop of recruiting D-I players from Nebraska, the bad news is that this was the first year he led a team to the NCAA tournament.
I do enjoy the fact that his teams were able to upset highly ranked teams like Wisconsin and Marquette when he was coaching North Dakota State during their D-I infancy.

Will there be shit talk on Sunday between the two of you's?

I can't fucking believe Florida is one win away from going to another Final Four. Talk about flying under the radar. Memo to Greg McGarity: Find us a damn Billy Donovan. Stat.

We're kinda pissed about this in Fort Collins. We did the best we've done in a long time, everyone's uniting around our basketball team since we suck at just about everything else. We were all hoping Miles would be in for the long haul, which until yesterday it seemed like he was.
