16 - The Raveonettes – Raven In The Grave

My love for what this duo does is well documented but that doesn’t mean they get an automatic pass. (I’m looking at you “Pretty In Black”). Fortunately, they have continued to wring beauty and emotion out of the same sound for almost a decade now and this album is no different. I thought it struck a great balance of the atmosphere of their EP’s and the 50’s inspired, reverb drenched, tunes from “Chain Gang of Love”. “Forget That You’re Young” and “Ignite” are as good as anything they’ve done and it’s as consistent as they’ve been.

I liked this enough to be 2 or 3 in their best. I tossed Pretty In Black, sadly. Wish I kept it as a memento for "what the hell."

14 – Telekinesis! – 12 Desperate Straight Lines

An early year purchase that I simply never tired of and one of the best things Merge Records put out last year. If you aren’t familiar, the guy plays a mean indie power pop. It was produced by Chris Walla (Death Cab for Cutie, Nada Surf) so you have an idea of the sonic palate. The hooks, sunny harmonies, incessant backbeats, and soaring choruses are relentless. There are a couple of real standout singles but taken as a whole it’s clear that this guy is a pop architect. Great summer album.

12 – Rebirth Brass Band – Rebirth of New Orleans

I’ll fully admit that this was purchased after being in New Orleans for 4 days for Jazzfest last year and was under that sound’s influence (heavily). BUT, without that trip I never would’ve picked up this amazing, party starting, piece of perfection. Nary an instrument, other than drums, that isn’t a brass horn. The whole thing is the sound of a sweaty night out in the Big Easy and stumbling into one of the best shows of your life. If you can listen to this and feel nothing, then you my friend, are dead. Laissez le bon temps rouler!

Yeah, I need to check this out.

I saw these guys the night of the Grammys. This album won for it's category and was the first brass band to win a Grammy. They were deservedly very excited. I've never bought an album of theirs but always really enjoyed them live. I've been meaning to pick this up ever since.

9 – Dum Dum Girls – Only In Dreams

Well, I didn’t see this coming. I had lumped this band in with a dozen other lo-fi reverb garage girl groups before I heard this. This is an album that is greater than the sum of it’s influences. There are elements of 60’s rock, 80’s fuzzed out psyche-rock, and 90’s melancholia, but at the root of it all are fantastic, note perfect songs. The lead singer has a Chrissie Hynde thing going on that is full of confidence. The sound will suck you in but the songs will keep you coming back. “Bedroom Eyes”, “Caught In One”, and especially “Coming Down” are undeniable.

8 – My Morning Jacket – Circuital

To me, “Evil Urges” sounded like a band at a crossroads. They had achieved great success and were moving in lots of different directions, unsure of where to go. I feel like with this album, they had found the direction. I find this to be an incredibly consistent record with some of their best songs to date. Not to mention the sound. Good god the sound. Carl Broemel is truly the secret weapon of this band. So many great moments on this record. What can I say…….”some things I know I’ll never get outta my system……”.

7 – The Booze – At Maximum Volume

Yes, the accusations are true. It’s derivative as hell. A young band still finding it’s own voice. Until they find it, all we’re left with is a fucking fantastic rock n roll record. “New York City Women”, “Long Way Down”, “Kick Me Where It Hurts”. These are like long lost Stones tracks from the mid-70’s. Thank god for bands like this.

6 – Tim Hecker – Ravedeath, 1972

It’s hard to really rank albums like these among so many traditional music records (read: rock records) but this deserves to be here. Easily the most stunning ambient record I heard last year and something I kept coming back to when I wanted to dip into this music. Unbelievable sounds and a true sonic artist. One of the most epic headphone listens of the year. Incredibly engaging, textured, and yes, CINEMATIC. His best work to date, and maybe his masterpiece.

5 – Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears – Scandalous

So when did these guys become the greatest bar band in the world? Horns, guitars, blues, rock, and soul workouts? There is no pretense whatsoever through the whole thing. Just a record that is looking to cut loose. It’s an incredibly difficult feat. So many records attempt to capture this vibe and fail miserably. Example, I love Robert Randolph but his records come off as completely sanitized and produced within an inch of their life. This feels loose, live, and rowdy. It mixes things up nicely and never gets stale or overstays it’s welcome. Party record of the year. “Where can I get my ham glazed……”

4 – Yuck – Yuck

I think I went through what most people did when hearing this the first time. I heard the grab bag of 90’s influences and sounds and was put off a bit at first. But it’s one thing to ape a sound and another thing altogether to DO something with that sound. It eventually won me over with it’s relentless creativity and sprawling ambition. There may be some nostalgia at play for my record collection circa 1992 but I simply can’t deny the great feeling I get while listening to this record. Just 50 minutes of noise-pop bliss. Easily the debut album of the year for me.

3 – Akron/Family – S/T II: The Cosmic Birth and Journey of Shinju TNT

The final drunken purchase on our list folks. I didn’t know much about Akron/Family when I bought it. I think I’d read a review and picked it up on impulse (on vinyl no less). Best decision ever. One of the craziest, warm, organic, and psychedelic album journeys I heard all year. Stylistically it’s all over the place with gently plucked acoustic numbers with ethereal barbershop harmonies to power chord distorted screaming choruses. It makes me FEEL like I’m on drugs over the course of the record. Like I’m miles deep in the woods at some tripped out campfire be in. If you don’t like what’s going on at the moment….wait……it’ll change in a minute. A total immersive record that I’ll be going back to for years to come. Too many wonderful moments to name.

2 – Daniel Romano – Sleep Beneath The Willow

I don’t think I need to add much here. It’s been pretty covered around these parts. A modern day Lee Hazelwood. The best of 60’s era AM country radio. A devastating work of songwriting genius (not to mention that he produced, engineered, and performed most of the instruments). All props to Billy for exposing me to this album. Completely restored my faith in country music. Gram Parsons would be proud.

1 – The Black Lips – Arabia Mountain

The Lips have been putting out good to great stuff for years now but the time was right for a change. Enter Mark Ronson. This was a producing clinic of how to polish a band without compromise. Everything sounds more even, more consistent. It’s like a Nuggets-esque Greatest Hits of psychedelic garage rock. “New Direction” was the song that initially sucked me in. Clearly a song of the year candidate but after many many spins, I’d have a tough time picking out the best of this ridiculously good set of tunes. They just keep coming one after the other. I’m not even sure how to describe the touchstones for this band to someone. Ramones, Yardbirds, Sonics, Cramps, the Who, Violent Femmes? Hell, even stuff like “Dumpster Dive” sounds like The Stones circa 1965. It mines 50 years of American underground music and comes out the other end with the best of all of it. Incredible.

I actually think this record isn't all that great, but I totally agree about Broemel...we both saw DBT and MMJ within weeks of each other last summer and one thing I carried away from the MMJ show was how much more I like what Broemel does on pedal steel than John Neff (sorry John)...dude is insane.

I've got to say it's rare that I don't even have an opinion on probably 90% of Derris' records. Jesus, Ben, you need to tell us about some of this stuff during the year. From your descriptions several of these sound good - I just couldn't or didn't bother to hear them.

For the record I agree on MMJ.

Nice work, Derris!

Several things I want to check out here in addition to Rebirth Brass Band. I feel like kind of a jerk for never having listened to a Black Lips album, and I guess I should do something about that.

Great List. I agree on that Dum Dum Girls. It will be an underground RnR classic imo. Good breakdown on that Black Lips. Was not my favorite at the time, but repeated listens made me fonder of it. The production is the key for me because the lack of it on previous albums made me tired of them. The Booze is great. I wish I caught it in the year.

You definitely should. As I said earlier in the thread, it was a great year for local bands.

Although I didn't list some of them, I enjoyed stuff by all of these bands:

Biters
The Booze
Black Lips
Mastadon
Atlas Sound
The Barrerracudas
Little Tybee
Gold-Bears
Manchester Orchestra
The Coathangers

I'm sure I'm forgetting some.

Interesting mix of stuff I like, stuff I suspect I'd hate, and stuff I should probably check out but probably won't.

Kudos for including this so high:

Still the best thing I've heard in a long, long time. He's playing the Buckhead Theatre on June 7th. I wish he'd play LA.

In a similar vein, you should check out Zoe Muth & the High Rollers. Another great countryish album that would have been a high finisher on my 2012 list if I'd heard it in time.

I guess I could have mentioned that but I don't have a clue who they are so I didn't consider it that noteworthy.

It’ll be 5 years this year since Isbell left the Truckers. Lots of shows and touring between then and now. This is the result. The best record of his career. He’s at his best when he stays in that classic country rock wheelhouse but he also succeeds, IMO, when he gets a little outside that (the Muscle Shoals soul of “Heart on a String”). It also has some of his best writing yet and his best song to date, “Codeine”; a song of the year candidate. Hopefully this all means he’s just getting started…..

Finally got around to this on Spotify (on Busty's strong-armed rec) and holy shit, it's very good. Some excellent work on this, both writing and playing.

It makes me sad that a lot of the gear used on this album (esp. his Duesenberg were stolen. The fucking tone is outstanding.

oh fuck. I am always surprised at how much great toruing gear gets stolen. I guess it's just THAT hard to lock shit well enough and park it somewhere safe. Too tempting, too easy to make off with it. That blows.

Business idea... work with record companies and labels and market a security system / GPS tracking system for gear trailers. I know a lot about them, shit works well and is stealthy.

I was so disappointed by his first solo album that I've had a hard time coming back around to Isbell. Will this renew my faith?

I loved his first solo album and never got into this one. Probably doesn't help, but that's my $.02
