I'm turned off by the album cover. Is this really twee and folky?

no. it's damn good, atmospheric. she has a glorious voice.

"glorious" like Antony or Joanna Newsom?

Shiv - there are a couple of songs on this blog: http://drownedinsoundcloud.com/post/186 ... r-ekstasis

i guess it's a bit like newsom's in that it can be bizarre and affected, but it's generally sweeter and less sharp than joanna's. this really has more so to do with julia holter committing herself to experimenting with sound and structure, within this release, between it and the rest of her output. it's refreshing especially played against grimes or nite jewel, which i also like. but nothing from this year comes close to touching "ekstasis" for me. i love it, think it's a great accomplishment, and that she has plenty more to come. Listen to it.

Julia Holter's voice isn't weird at all, and the music is way less folky than Newsom. I would never think of comparing the two. It's almost like a slightly weirder, more lo-fi Beach House, maybe.

thanks stu. i already had d/l'ed the album though.

i listened today and wasn't into it. i don't hear anything in this that would make it album of the year but i don't usually go for this type of music (beach house, joanna newsom, nite jewel, etc).

Easily the best thing he's ever done.

If you prefer his power pop side to his twangy country stuff, you'll dig this big time.

Better than Radish?

(I would think your Texas chauvinism* would have you touting Restraining Bolt as better than Nirvana, Bush, & Silverchair, combined.)

*All Texans, regardless party affiliation, church membership, football rooting interest, are chauvinists. Highland Park is just the country club & guns flipside of Austin's vegan, gluten-free burritos & noise rock.

i listened to go fly a kite again yesterday, and while it's still enjoyable, i may have been overselling it just a bit upon further review

My top albums of the year, to date (I haven't heard nearly as many as most of you):

1. Barry Adamson - I Will Set You Free
2. Fun. - Some Nights
3. Kelly Hogan - I Like to Keep Myself In Pain
4. Cate Le Bon - Cyrk
5. Dr. John - Locked Down
6. OFF! - OFF!
7. Justin Townes Earle - Nothing's Going to Change The Way You Feel About Me Now
8. Martin Newell - Stopping Train
9. Joe Pug - The Great Despiser

REISSUES:
Cleaners From Venus - Cleaners From Venus, Vol. 1 (Box Set)
Alex Chilton - Free Again: The 1970 Sessions

And, I know that there were one or two hip-hop albums that I liked this year, but I can't remember offhand.
