Belle & Sebastien – Late Night Tales Vol. 2 - 2012

The celebrated Scottish indie pop group Belle and Sebastian are welcomed back for a second Late Night Tales, the 27th in the esteemed compilation series. Belle and Sebastian formed in Glasgow in 1996 where the success of college recorded cult debut album ‘Tigermilk’ led the band to signing to Jeepster for ‘If You’re Feeling Sinister’; listed by Pitchfork at #14 in its top 100 albums of the 90s and is widely considered the band’s masterpiece. Following the critically acclaimed ‘The Boy With The Arab Strap’ B&S signed with Rough Trade (UK) and Matador (US) and have released a further five albums, most recently ‘Belle And Sebastian Write About Love’ in 2010. Other accolades include being voted Scotland’s greatest band in a poll by The List in 2005, their own Bowlie Weekender festival, a Brit Award and Mercury Music Prize and Ivor Novello Award nominations. The current line-up is founder Stuart Murdoch, Stevie Jackson, Chris Geddes, Richard Colburn, Sarah Martin, Mick Cooke and Bobby Kildea.

Their scene straggling 2006 Late Night Tales included pure pop, 60s psyche, 70s rock, West Coast harmonies, beat groups, folk balladering, punk, indie, girl groups, bossanova. This new selection only delves deeper into their shared influences and inspirations, along with a subtle nod to digging for rare sampled beats: not perhaps an trait usually associated with B&S. World-wise psychedelic breaks thread the mix together; significantly so with two tracks from Broadcast bookending a first half that includes late 60s dreamers The Wonder Who? and Joe Pass, father of Ethio-jazz Mulatu Astatke, harpist Dorothy Ashby and the 21st century beats of Gold Panda.

Following a mid-section detour through dissonant post-punk and deep jazz courtesy of The Pop Group and Stan Tracey Quartet; recent releases from fellow Scots Remember Remember and South Carolina’s Toro Y Moi rubs shoulders with Ce’cile’s 2002 Cure referencing riddim ‘Rude Bwoy Thug Life’ and Blood, Sweat & Tears classic version of ‘Spinning Wheel’. For the obligatory Late Night Tales cover version, Belle and Sebastian have chosen The Primitive’s 1988 pop-punk classic ‘Crash’, recreated in the band’s own inimitable style. Two beautiful records close the mix: Steve Parks haunting soul vocal ‘Still Thinking Of You’ and an excerpt of the calm improvisation ‘On The Other Ocean’ from David Behrman’s 1977 experimental album. As ever, the trip concludes with our bedtime story with the third part of Paul Morley’s ‘Lost For Words’.

This is music for the Celt in all of us. Holed up in a West End of Glasgow apartment, the wind yowling mercilessly about us, we drift off to the sound of bliss. There is only warmth here and, obviously, a draft or two fired in the direction of Belle and her good friend Sebastien.

1. Broadcast – Ominous Cloud
2. The Wonder Who? – Watch The Flowers Grow
3. Joe Pass – A Time For Us
4. Mulatu Astatke Yekermo Sew – A Man Of Experience And Wisdom
5. Milton Nascimento & Lô Borges – Tudo Que Você Podia Ser
6. Marie Laforêt – Et Si Je t’aime
7. Bonnie Dobson – Bird Of Space
8. Dorothy Ashby – Soul Vibrations
9. McDonald And Giles – Tomorrow’s People
10. Gold Panda – Quitters Raga
11. Broadcast – Chord Simple
12. The Pop Group – Savage Sea
13. Stan Tracey Quartet – Starless And Bible Black
14. The Lovin Spoonful – Darling Be Home Soon Sony
15. Belle And Sebastian – Crash(Exclusive cover version of The Primitives)
16. Roland Vincent – L.S.D. Partie
17. Toro Y Moi – Still Sound
18. Ce’cile – Rude Bwoy Thug Life
19. Remember Remember – Scottish Widows
20. Trees – Streets Of Derry
21. Blood, Sweat & Tears – Spinning Wheel
22. Pete Shelley – Homosapien (Dub)
23. Steve Parks – Still Thinking Of You

Lightships - Electric Cables

Quote:
Gerard Love, singer, songwriter and bassist with Teenage Fanclub – which is another way of saying "indie rock god" – has gone and made a record under the alias Lightships. For it, he has enlisted a bunch of friends, all based in Glasgow, namely Dave McGowan (guitar, Teenage Fanclub), Brendan O'Hare (drums, from the first incarnation of Teenage Fanclub), Tom Crossley (flute, International Airport and the Pastels) and Bob Kildea (bass, Belle & Sebastian).

Innernet tubes tell me they're three guys from Brooklyn with a few self-released singles and not much else.

Local Chicago mainstay vintage rocker pop mastermind extrordinarre, Wes Hollywood, swung by the shop and laid these 11 vinylized treats right down on us. One LP is in stereo, the other is in mono, both are different mixes. We'll let Sweet Science Records hit you with a little more history and a few more cool deets on "Fantasy Arcade":
Wes Hollywood is a beautiful conundrum. He is at once a modern craftsman and a retro stylist, a purveyor of vintage rock songcraft whose stylish leather boots are planted firmly in the 21st century. His new record is Fantasy Arcade, and it's the best thing he's ever done.
Mr. Hollywood has been a staple in independent music for more than a decade, first with The Wes Hollywood Show and then with a couple of well-received platters as tenniscourts. The name has changed, but the sound has remained a constant - two parts delirious Kinks melodicism mixed with one part Cheap Trick whipcrack, a splash of harmony and a bracing dash of fashion. This potent brew has never sounded better than it does on Fantasy Arcade. This album is everything that's great about Wes Hollywood distilled to its essence - 11 perfect pop confections that will have you bobbing your head and singing along by the second chorus. There are rock songs for the teddy boys and ballads for the weepers, each one like a favorite 45 on the jukebox you've spent your life looking for.

The maestro has taken his vintage fetishism one step farther - Fantasy Arcade is available in both stereo and mono versions. While downloaders can have their choice, those lucky saps who get their hands on the limited-edition vinyl will be treated to a DOUBLE GATEFOLD LP, one with each mix, so they can let their ears decide which is better. Lucky dogs.

Since the 2009 reactivation of the classic 1990s lineup of the Chrome Cranks fans have been grinding their teeth for a new album of the influential New York band’s volatile, high-octane blasts. In these chokingly bleak, post-ironic times there simply aren’t any other acts out there like the Cranks, who play unapologetically confrontational, utterly incendiary rock ’n’ roll like they mean it with every poisoned pore. Like few bands before or since, the foursome—singer/guitarist Peter Aaron, guitarist William G. Weber, drummer Bob Bert, and bassist Jerry Teel—simultaneously embraces and destroys rock’s very traditions. But finally this soft, pain-deserving world has something new to choke on: Ain’t No Lies in Blood, the first album of new Chrome Cranks material since 1997.

Cut and mixed in three blistering days with producer Kevin McMahon (Walkmen, Swans, Titus Andronicus) in Upstate New York, Ain’t No Lies in Blood is the eighth album in the Cranks’ nearly 25-year history—and their hardest, noisiest, heaviest, and nastiest by far. In keeping with the band’s earlier oeuvre, it’s another swirling hell of dark, raw, distorted blues-based squalls; hypnotic, labyrinthine detours through primordial swampland; and searing flashes of deep, torchy drama. This release, however, strips the outfit’s minimal, no-bullshit M.O. even farther down, to its most savage and primal essence. There’s the locomotive, open-wounded wail of “I’m Trash,” which flattens all in its path and hints at early ’80s hardcore angst, and “Rubber Rat,” a screaming, stomping mess of bony, cartilage-cracking fists. Three radically remade covers include an epic trawl through the Byrds’ “Lover of the Bayou,” and of course the Cranks’ trademark murky ’n’ moody side is present in all its black, jagged glory: Check the swaggering decadence of “Let it Ring” and “Star to Star.”

“[The Chrome Cranks] had me screaming with joy,” says Swans/Angels of Light front man Michael Gira, who witnessed the reunited band’s return show in 2009 and later drew the demonic cover art for Ain’t No Lies in Blood. “I almost threw my beer at them, I was so happy.”

Formed by Aaron and Weber (G.G. Allin’s Murder Junkies) in Cincinnati, Ohio, in the late ’80s, the Chrome Cranks moved to New York in 1992 and acquired Teel (Honeymoon Killers) and, eventually, Bert (Sonic Youth, Pussy Galore). The quartet’s explosive sound, capped with Aaron’s paint-scraping voice and feral stage persona, quickly saw the Cranks rise to the top of the Lower East Side trash heap. After a split EP with Foetus, the band’s eponymous debut on PCP Entertainment arrived in 1994; Dead Cool (Crypt Records, 1995) and Love in Exile (1997, PCP Entertainment) followed, as well as several live and archival releases. The outfit toured Europe, the US, and Canada incessantly and appeared on MTV before splitting in 1998, leaving deep marks on future members of the White Stripes, Mooney Suzuki, and other acts who’ve cited the Cranks as an influence. The group reunited for shows in the US and Europe in 2009 and 2010.

“This is music that could have popped up in any bar over the last forty years, give or take a few squeals,” writes the New Yorker’s Sasha Frere-Jones. “If you aren’t particularly interested in this year’s most unusual trend and want to cut to the chase, the Chrome Cranks will be there, grinding away at their Platonic ideal of rock ’n’ roll.”

A horrifically powerful record, Ain’t No Lies in Blood shows that for the Chrome Cranks mellowing with age is simply not an option. Back to the grind!

Pittsburgh's Slices returns with another wrecking ball of noise-infested nihilism on Still Cruising, the band's latest offering via Iron Lung Records, follow-up to last year's Kemado-released Modern Bride / Chump Change 7", and sequel to their 2010 debut LP Cruising on Iron Lung. For the unfamiliar, Slices utilize a mix of razor-sharp hardcore and noise-punk that recalls favorites like Brainbombs or Pissed Jeans. Clocking in at a taut 20-minutes, Slices' compelling new offering never outwears its welcome and cements the band's vitriolic virtuosity.

that Lightships also has a slight High Llamas vibe, in addition to what you'd expect given the membership.

Bahamas - Barchords

CoS review Wrote:
Barchords bottles up the California lo-fi, acoustic aesthetic so well that the album practically situates the listener on a windswept Pacific beach as the sun sets. An astute student of the male crooner canon, Bahamas whips soul-infused vocals, bittersweet lyrics, and uplifting melodies into an airy, acoustic dream. What makes Bahamas worth a listen is the soulful pairing of glowing, slow-building melodies and sun-kissed songs. It’ll definitely help with the late winter thaw, but Barchords should also linger past the spring solstice, occupying summer beach-bound ears.

http://bahamasmusic.net/ (check out the videos as they do an excellent job telling you who this guy is and where he's coming from musically)

and this American Songwriter review by Stephen Deusner does a good job of describing what the videos portray
Stephen Deusner Wrote:
For all the inspiration he finds in his record collection, Jurvanen doesn’t cordon off styles and sounds, but rather combines and contrasts them in unexpected ways. A shrill ‘70s guitar solo (think Jeff Lynne producing Cheap Trick) interrupts the thrumming rhythms of “OK Alright I’m Alive,” and his loud, bluesy solo on “Your Sweet Touch” is one riff away from the Black Keys. Jurvanen obviously knows his stuff, but he avoids outright imitation: These songs are both historical and personal, familiar yet fresh.

This reminds me of that Brokedick Warriors rekkid, but instead of wearing influences on its sleeve and having a sloppy party vibe overall, this seems to wear the influence of each song on a different sleeve. I like it though - pretty much exactly how you described it Rads.

Emeli Sandé
Our Version of Events

Spotify has a commentary "album" where she discusses each track individually. Pretty cool.

The Telegraph Wrote:
The Brits’ Critics Choice Award may have been lampooned for crowning acts before they earn their stripes, but you can’t deny that the panel has a canny habit of backing a winning horse. Since the prize was launched in 2008, the recipients read like a who’s who of successful contemporary British female singer-songwriters: Adele, Florence and the Machine, Ellie Goulding and Jessie J. All have been bright, idiosyncratic artists, with talent in spades.

Continuing that trend, this year’s feted big-seller is Emeli Sandé, a 24-year-old Scot of black South African decent and a former medical student with a bleached quiff and a voice like honey and thunder. This remarkable debut splices urban flare with pop savvy, and proves her a worthy pick.

Sandé’s road to recognition has been via two distinct avenues. First she offered vocal ballast to tracks from grimy hit-makers Wiley, Devlin and Professor Green, but latterly she has been co-writing more conventional pop songs for talent-show alumni Leona Lewis, Cher Lloyd and even Susan Boyle, prompting Simon Cowell to name-check her as his “favourite songwriter of the moment”.

Here, the twin paths intersect: Our Version of Events often sounds like an album operating on two levels, with songs that flourish on a tension between rawness and polished craft.
