Former Penn State DC Jerry Sandusky, who is charged with multiple accounts of alleged child sexual abuse, mourned the late Joe Paterno: "Nobody will be able to take away the memories we all shared of a great man, his family, and all the wonderful people who were a part of his life. He maintained a high standard in a very difficult profession," Sandusky said in a statement.

Westboro picketing the funeral should be interesting:

I can almost guarantee a ton of PSU kids will attempt to kick the shit out of them.

Until I see clear evidence otherwise, I'm convinced he was in on it.

And by in on it I don't mean "knew what Sandusky was up to" I mean "was fucking them kids, too."

Yeah, I suppose my current line is that he found out in 1998-99 and tried to brush it under the carpet by getting Jerry to retire, which (as Fu asserted) would still make a lot of his 2002 story bullshit. He did a lot of good for a lot of people over the course of his life and career, and he failed at a point when it really mattered. I suspect the trial outcomes will dictate how most people will view him in the long run, whether that means he was part of the monger network or just had an absurd case of navieté.

I think Bomani Jones is on the right track: Paterno got caught up in trying to protect and preserve something he had built up, and even believed a lot of his the own hero worship that had been built up around him. Paterno even used his reputation as a competitive advantage, i.e. "We aren't like that", even though in a lot of ways they were, and in this way, much much worse. Football coaches aren't heroes, and it's way more than obvious that Penn State isn't more virtuous than other institutions.

and in a related article about Meyer stealing recruits from WI:

Quote:
Bielema didn't disclose any details, though he had more to say about his conversation with Meyer.

He said Meyer asked him: "You know what the difference between the Big Ten and our conference is? I said, 'No', and he said, 'In the Big Ten, everybody tells on everybody. In our conference nobody tells on anybody.'

What a fucking douchebag. Fucking gators.

It cracks me up that Deadspin keeps referring to the Petrino motorcycle crash and subsequent fallout as "Ozark Chappaquiddick."

Just saw a funny quote from an unnamed SEC coach, regarding Petrino: "You can push the envelope when you win like Petrino, but he was wiping his ass with the envelope!"

Given that Deadspin has been doing splash sponsor treatments of late -- Hotmail, most recently; infamously, Sobe LifeWater -- I am surprised they didn't call it Ozarkaquiddick & get that bottled water money.

First thing I thought when I heard the news: Gotta ask Chad about that on the pod.

You're preaching to the choir. I thought he should have been canned when he testified at the Omaha City Council hearing and used Memorial stadium as his permanent address. I've never really been that impressed with his coaching acumen, but he does seem to be a decent recruiter. I think he connects well with those homophobic African American families with allegedly good christian values.
I'm hoping that the President of the University has a zero tolerance policy on him now like Bob Knight, and that they quickly get him to quit coaching and become a hate mongering minister sooner rather than later. I just have my doubts about Tom Osborne letting that happen.

I can't believe we're actually gonna get some version of a CFB playoff.
