Someone please explain Spotify (mobile) to me. Do I have to have the mp3s to stream music on my phone?

I assume it uses your mobile wifi / cell connection to stream the same music to your phone that it would to your pc.

(edit: "uses, not "sues")

I'm still finding stuff on mediafire, btw.

Am I in some kind of danger for downloading from there?

Hmmm, not me. Seems like mediafire has really scrubbed its servers.

I realize it's a different medium but with all kinds of hands involved in the film industry, I'm wondering why this kind of free downloading hasn't been as prevalent as it has in music?

Bigger files and people like to watch movies on a bigger screen than their computer screen and not a lot of people have an integrated computer/tv setup. If you want to burn DVDs from downloads it takes additional software and even then it can be a pain to fit a movie at full quality on a single disc in some cases. Basically it is just that little bit more difficult.

Partly just larger files. They lend themselves more to torrents, and they probably make up a pretty big chunk of all the bit torrent traffic out there.

Also, movies don't leak the same way albums do because promo copies aren't (usually, afaik) sent out for review that can be uploaded. And it's more time consuming to rip and upload a movie.

I think the MPAA had a little bit of an advantage over the RIAA, too, in that people started downloading music before movies so they had a little bit of a head start in trying to prevent it from happening.

or what nobody said

That and most people feel less need to own movies versus rent them and watch them once. So if you are only saving $1-4, is it really worth the hassle?

Yeah, I guess I'm not ripping a 100 movies onto my (insert media device) for a weekend trip to the beach.

Still, I figured there are plenty of people out there just as obsessed about movies as I am about music. Particularly stuff like the new Wes Anderson movie coming out this summer or the new Dark Knight movie or The Avengers that the DragonCon set flip out about. You can find a leak for about any album that comes out well before it's release it seems but you rarely hear about these kinds of movies leaking.

I think this just comes back to people wanting the "full experience" with seeing a movie on the big screen. I'm sure those movies leak in advance, but it has to be much easier for people to resist the temptation because of that. Whereas when an album leaks, you're gonna listen multiple times anyway, so what's the harm in listening to the leak once or twice?

Am I the only one that doesn't really care about leaks? I mean, I like being able to hear things without forking over cash from downloads, but I really do't care if I get it a week before some arbitrary release day or not.

I'm getting a bit tired of (mostly punk) bands releasing demos. Like, consistently, as if "it's the thing to do." If your band doesn't have label interest or can't make the scratch to self-release a 7" record, let alone finish a recording to completion, then keep that shit to yourself. I know it's an irrational attitude, but it's one of my few crotchety views on the music scene.
