Quote:
Musician Levon Helm, a Woodstock resident and former member of The Band, is in the final stages of his battle with cancer, according to his website, www.levonhelm.com.

Helm, 71, has had a long battle with throat cancer but has continued to perform his Saturday night “rambles” at his home in recent years. Several scheduled shows in recent weeks have been canceled, however.

“Levon is in the final stages of his battle with cancer. Please send your prayers and love to him as he makes his way through this part of his journey,” reads a statement on his website that’s attributed to his wife, Sandy, and his daughter, Amy.

Sad, but known that it was coming.

Sad to hear. I was looking forward to seeing him in a few weeks at Jazzfest but learned yesterday that he had cancelled. I figured it was probably health related but didn't realize that it was as serious as this.

Damn. I knew it'd be quick. Most estates don't make those types of announcements until it's the very end.

Made some amazing music and lived a great life.

RIP.

(from memory) "Mr Levon had him a strip of meat on him. After Levon there wasn't no more to get, he done got it ALL."

The prostitute in Arkansas that frequented the late night band parties in the early days, as written up in Across The Great Divide.

A true fucking original, a uniquely gifted musician and a fine American. Rest in peace, Levon Helm.

Also a very good grounded, rooted counterfigure to Robbie's coke-fueled egomania after things got bad. Both wild, but in different ways. Levon had little pretension about him. Levon would never have called what he was wearing an "outfit."

I love that his shirt has a LEVON patch in the Classic Albums episode about the S/T.

I didn't notice this. I'm going to have to go back and watch it again.

Rob Delaney reminds us that we should all be more like Levon this election season:

Good read and a genuine post. He's typically more funny and crude on twitter.
