Neil Young and Crazy Horse will release their new LP Americana on June 5th. It's their first album together since Greendale in 2003, and their first album with the full Crazy Horse line-up of Billy Talbot, Ralph Molina and Frank "Poncho" Sampedro since Broken Arrow in 1996. The songs on Americana are all classic American folk songs, including "This Land Is Your Land," "Gallows Pole," "Tom Dooley" and "Clementine."

At the Slamdance Film Festival earlier this year, Young talked about the album. "A very young choir of children plays with Crazy Horse [on the album,]" he said. "They're songs we all know from kindergarden, but Crazy Horse has rearranged them, and they now belong to us."

"What ties these songs together is the fact that while they may represent an America that may no longer exist," says a press release announcing the new album."The emotions and scenarios behind these songs still resonate with what’s going on in the country today with equal, if not greater impact nearly 200 years later. The lyrics reflect the same concerns and are still remarkably meaningful to a society going through economic and cultural upheaval, especially during an election year. They are just as poignant and powerful today as the day they were written."

The disc was recorded at Audio Casa Blanca and was produced by Neil Young and John Hanlon with Mark Humphreys.

Neil Young and Crazy Horse made their first live appearance since 2004 last month at the MusicCares tribute to Paul McCartney in Los Angeles. They played "I Saw Her Standing There" that many critics called a highlight of the star-studded show, though the band has released no touring plans. "I honestly have not heard a solitary thing about touring," Crazy Horse drummer Ralph Molina wrote on his Facebook page last month.

Here is the complete track-listing for Americana:

"Oh Susannah"
"Clementine
"
"Tom Dooley"
"
Gallows Pole
"
"Get A Job
"
"Travel On
"
"High Flyin’ Bird
"
"She’ll Be Comin ’Round The Mountain"
"This Land Is Your Land
"
"Wayfarin’ Stranger
"
"God Save The Queen"

No "Froggy Went a-Courtin."?

This has Bad Idea Jeans written all over it

Guess we'll have to wait until the expanded deluxe reissue for "Yankee Doodle."

Thrasher's Wheat had this:

Quote:
The album cover design has a fascinating back story.

The Americana cover is based on a photograph of Geronimo driving a car on June 11, 1905, near Ponca City, Okla. The car is a Locomobile, and the Indian in full headdress to Geronimo's left is Edward Le Clair Sr., a Ponca Indian. When Geronimo died in 1909, he was buried in the vest.

Apparently, according to album notes, the Americana cover was rescued from the 2010 warehouse fire from an earlier design in 1975. The faces of Neil Young, Billy Talbot (Geronimo), Ralph Molina, & Poncho Sampedro were pasted over the original photo for a cover that was never used.

Also, they posted DM and NY doing "Oh! Susanna" from the Bridge School Benefit 2011.

I didn't look at the tracklist before I read your post and was thinking..."There goes ol' Gar, running another joke into the ground" but no, you are beyond right: "She'll Be Comin Round The Mountain"?! Just fucking shoot me now.

Ol Froggy shoulda gone a-scalpin' while they were recording this.

This is something I will probably listen to once and then slam my fingers in a door. This fucking band gets together once a decade and they give me "This Land is Your Land"?!

I hate this and the album cover as well.

And all of a sudden I remember why I really can never quite get into Neil Young in the first place.

Because he did an album of folk standards?

Yeah, I openly hate this idea but that's just stupid.

No, not really so much the folk standards thing, although I feel like the song selection does make it look pretty horrible. I really just don't much care for more than a stray song here and there from him and get annoyed with the canonization of everything Neil Young in some circles. And his tendency to go off and make theme albums which endears him to many I find mostly annoying... although I did kinda like a track or two on that rockabilly one he did way back when.

Also... if hating an idea an artist comes up with isn't a good way to be reminded you don't like said artist... I'm not sure what is.

I guess I'm willing to give him a pass because for the most part I've really enjoyed (almost) everything he's put out. Also, I know these aren't going to be direct covers of the songs. That vid with Dave Matthews attests to that. Skeleton is there, but Neil added some meat and guts to it. Not saying its gonna be an amazing record, but I think it could be interesting. I guess I also see this as different than say what Rod Stewart did with the "Great American Songbook" albums.

But then again, I dig Pete Seeger so I guess maybe I'm geared towards stuff like this.

I really just do many stray songs from him here and there without too much care and Neil Young all the canonized annoyed in some circles.
