Excellent film!
I never craved a cigarette so bad watching it, though.
The last film that that I saw in the theatre that was this fucked up was Natural Born Killers.
The way the it was directed was just about identical to the graphic novel.
I'm looking forward to seeing it again.

it was, in fact, awesome.

in addition, i would encourage robert rodriguez to write and direct a film in which carla gugino is naked for the duration of the entire film.

Yeah, I though the same thing regarding the cigarettes. One of your better smoking movies in the last while.

and what, if any, comment is there provided about "reality" via the imagined reality of SC and Frank Miller? is it just really well-done escapism and that's all we should really expect?

anyhow, i'd recommend seeing it, as it definitely has a lot going for it in the "wow" department, but i'm disappointed that the style of it really, really, really dominated much of the potential substance, at least from my uninformed, unitiated perspective v-a-v graphic novels.
no, the only point is that it's a surreal, noir, fantasy world in which good and evil are discrete concepts, the powerbrokers fall squarely into the evil category, and there are people fighting against it that fall within what we would normally call the "outskirts" of morality. that's why the canvas is so limited as to be black and white with spots of carefully chosen color, because it's a comic book that occupies a very specific universe. i'm really disappointed but not surprised that some people are going to have the reaction that it was lessened because it didn't develop some of the characters, but again, there's not much that you need to know about them if they're going to more or less be quarks defined by spin one way or another. the movie is about the character of the people that fight and survive against an overwhelming force, it's not about subtlety.

Being a big fan of Frank Miller, Robert Rodriguez, and Tarantino (as well as having 3 margaritas and 2 beers in me) I had pretty high expectations for this movie. I think the visual style and the "That Yellow Bastard" portion of the script, more than lived up to it. The middle of the movie dragged a littlel bit, and I sort of wish they had just made a movie of one of the graphic novels rather than trying to link 3 together. Ironically, I think the dialogue and voiceovers were more successful when they were more over the top, ie Hartigan's cliched but true to life musings.

Anyway, a good movie. Let's hope it leads to more good Frank Miller movies. Dark Knight Returns, Ronin, the origninal Wolverine mini-series, hell even Martha Washington Goes To War. Plenty of good material.

I thought it was very good. I had some jackass guy behind me who'd let out his crazy laugh during the most violent gory scenes. He'd be the only guy yucking it up. Not sure if he was doing it to seem cool or if he found those scenes genuinely hilarious but it sure as hell tiik my attention away from the flic.

I loved the visuals and comic cheese dialogue/tone but something just didn't click to make think of this as a great/top movie for me. I may need to see again without that damn kid behind me.

It was by the far the most faithful-to-a-comic book movie I've ever seen. I don't know if I'd say it's the best (Ghost World comes to mind as a better, albeit completely different one), but it was an amazing acheivement. I read the first graphic novel (the portion about Marv) the night before going to see this, and I certainly couldn't complain about the film taking departures from the graphic novel. If anything, that segment seemed a little rushed (some good segments, like when Marv visits his Mom, were left out), and it probably could have been better served as its own hour-and-a half-movie.

Overall I really enjoyed it, and I think it goes to show that, especially with totally creator-driven projects like Sin City, the comic book itself can and probably should be used as more or less the storyboard/ screenplay for any movie made from it. That certainly would have made League of Extraordinary Gentlemen about a million times better.

Anyway, yeah sometimes the dialogue was painfully cliche and the characters too flat to really evoke any sympathy or carry any emotional weight, but those could be traced back to the original stories. There was some bad acting in parts, and the voice-overs could become monotonous at times. None of that really stopped me from enjoying the movie.

Great casting with Elijah Wood as Kevin. That was awesome.

Also, word is that the DVD release will feature a longer "unedited" version of the film where each of the three graphic novels represented in the film will be shown in their entireity, separated into three self-contained stories like in the books. Hopefully this will improve the pacing of the Marv section which is probably the best of the three novels.

I was just absolutely blown away. I wasn't into the graphic novels because they came out right around when I stopped reading comics. But damn, this movie more than surpassed my already-high expectations, based on the hype alone. I was very impressed, and can't wait to see it again.

Making it slightly better than Telefon, or any sub Z grade Bronson movie.

KPH and Rads nailed it. The visuals were cool. Nice gimick. Now give me a usable plot.

Also, I think this movie would have been improved exponentially had they played it straight (i.e, when a dude gets shot 178 times, dies, etc..I guess that' what being a comic book is about, and what I don't like about comic books all wrapped in a neat little package) and explored the characters of the Priest and the Senator and how they gained power a little more.

Also, this read like a comic James Ellroy story. I kept waiting for one of the dudes to be name Big Pete, or for the Kasfejians to pop up...sort of a cross between White Jazz and some of the darker Big Pete stuff from AMTAB and Cold Six.

Not a bad movie, but 2 stars AT BEST. By the end, I was ready for it to be over.

And I will hereby proclaim that I Will Never See a Comic Book Movie again.

It was really good. Sorry, DHR, I was that guy laughing - it's comic book violence! It's there to revel in!

I was nervous when it started, because the first few scenes were slow as hell and Michael Madsen was h-o-r-r-i-b-l-e. Did someone tell him he was supposed to play the character as though he was literally reading from a comic book? Cause he did. Once the Marv sequence started everything came together.

eh. your opinion and i think it's in the minority but whatever. it's nowhere near comparable to a z-grade bronson film but seeing as how (i guess) you haven't read the comics and aren't a fan of comic book movies this is what you come up with for a comparison.

I guess I'm the last one to see it.

All I can say is that it was an incredible and even inspiring motion picture. I could have watched another hour when it ended. Other than Michael Madsen, the acting was fantastic. Mickey Rourke WAS Marv. The Elijah Wood scenes were some of the creepiest, best imagery I've ever seen in a movie. His glasses, the way he moved, everything. I'd call it the best comic book movie ever, but it kind of surpasses the "comic book movie" thing altogether.

Saw it last night, it's definitely brutal. I think they managed to capture the pulp/comic book feel pretty well, both visually with the B&W and splashes of color, and with the '50's cliches. My wife and both thought it would have been more effective to leave much of the violence off camera, but I guess you have to appeal to the uber-violent video game crowd. All in all, a well-crafted flick. Don't need to see it twice, nor own it on DVD though.

Saw this yesterday, and I'm in that minority with BR, KPH and Loogar. Admittedly, I'm not much of a comic book to film fan, and this movie did have a lot of great visuals, but it was the definition of style over substance for me, and I'd prefer a lot of both in a great film.

I can see why so many people are gushing over it, though.

i'm sure that you fully expected to love it, and that this reaction comes as a surprise to someone, somewhere.

every negative review that i see of this flick, here or in print, invariably comes down to only saying "this movie wasn't the movie that i wanted it to be".
