See, I'm cool with Lisanti's Mad Ranks, but I'm all about Molly Lambert's synopses. (Particularly, when I miss the preceding nite's episode.) She & Rembert & Morris are the best that site has going.
Meanwhile, Davy Rothbart looks exactly like the Quizmaster for the Monday evening event at Cafe Hollander in Tosa.
Rembert's writing is like that of a college newspaper hipster with no editor. I don't mind the Mad Ranks - I just think that Finger Bang thing is sloppily written and tragically unfunny.
The best thing the site has going is the same that they on "Sports Guy's World" - Simmons and Klosterman.
Oh, I've been running hot & cold on Klosterman. Right now, hot. The Evening with the World's Least Popular Bands (Nickelback & Creed) was a great take.
& Simmons? I share his taste in pornography, if not sports teams....
He's not the best writer by any means, and I think he often misses the real main thrust of issues, but dude sells his schtick as good as or better than anyone. The constant cross referencing to his own material is annoying as fuck, but brilliant. Act like you're the best and people will fall in line.
The majority of the rest of the writing is mired by bad to no editing, and hacky bits that any good editor would cut out right or have re-worked. The ledes and especially the fake quotes and stuff wouldn't be as annoying if they were EVER funny or even interesting.
And the constant referring to jokes (like Jacoby always calling the dude from the Bachelor "Ben who i've never seen in the same room as rafa nadal") is ok for BS but no one else really gets it right. Like in this case, just call the dude Rafa - it's not like you have a word count or a space to fill.
The Jalen Rose podcast would be the best thing they put out, but Jacoby is his co-host. I also wonder why he always backs Jalen off of saying things, The Hollywood Prospectus guys always referencing him censoring them, and yet Lisanti gets to write about a Finger Bang Threat Level -- what's worse, saying that or saying Fuck?
