Dead of apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

Story is still developing....

Seems fishy.

He is the eighth member of the 1994 AFC Champion San Diego Chargers to die.

Somehow, Bobby Ross is not one of those eight. & the man's something like 120 years old.

He didn't have the intellect to operate a firearm.

I dunno. I initially misread that there was an altercation. Turns out it was the police talking to a "distraught man" outside of the house. Most likely a family member.

Still, I always thought he was pretty intelligent and grounded outside of the game. Hopefully this doesn't turn up some dark side of the man that forced him to this.

I dunno, he drove off a cliff a couple of years ago; he said it was an accident but folks near him hinted it was a suicide attempt.

Not saying this was the cause, but these brain injuries...maybe dudes like Malcolm Gladwell and Paul Begala are right--maybe something IS wrong with football.

That's what people are supposing, because of the similarity to the Dave Duerson suicide.

kind of raises the stakes for this thing next week
Quote:
Next week, web publication Slate will sponsor a debate between two teams. On one side, New Yorker writer Malcolm Gladwell and author Buzz Bissinger will argue that college football should be banned. FOXSports.com columnist Jason Whitlock and broadcaster -- and former Atlanta Falcon -- Tim Green will argue that college football remains a worthwhile endeavor.

The implications for paid football -- erm, OFFICIALLY paid football -- would be astounding. While the immediate thought would be "it's the death of the NFL, as football has no minor league system (wink)", I actually foresee the event of a tiered pro system like you see in European (actual) football (as played with feet). Imagine 80 or an hundred pro teams, divisions of twenty, relegation. Maybe even a Champion's League type set-up with the CFL for the US football offseason.

Can we dare to dream?

Certainly, there're enough channels to accomodate the volume of games you would have. FOX, CBS, NBC, ESPN could retain their contracts for what would become the top flight/top twenty teams in the current NFL, & NFL Network, NBC Sports Channel, AMC, Travel Channel could buy in to the secord, third, & fourth levels.

What I'm saying is a lack of college football wouldn't kill the pros. In fact, fully professionalizing the game would increase its popularity.

Well pot is quasi-legal in a growing number of places already so that may not be the best scenario.

What could actually end college football is lawsuits: University presidents and Boards of Regents would shut that shit down faster than you can say "Boo" if it means avoiding major lawsuits.

The local media is loving this shit. I have no personal connection to Seau since I could not give a shit about the Chargers but it still seems pretty crazy he killed himself. It'd be like if Tony Gwynn killed himself.

Meanwhile, if only Stephen Strasburg would....

But, on the Seau side, maybe they can preserve his head next to the Splinter's.
