The 5+ hour tv mini-series version.

It was amazing. Probably my favorite Bergman to date.

Avengers was really good. Better than I expected, and I expected a lot.

well it turned out to be "ok" not his best but he sure killed a LOT of baddies,
many more than he normally does, the nasty men usually just get broken bones
but this time he is out for revenge so shoots them dead after beating them up, a lot! so...
6/10 sorry, Jayce

Yeah it was a whole lot of fun. I don't know if it was better than expected, but it certainly lived up to all expectations and hype.

I could nitpick a little. So I will.

-To call Samuel L. Jackson's performance "phoned-in" would be to give him too much credit.
-ScarJo wasn't too bad, but I still don't buy her as that character at all.
-The first 20 minutes or so of this movie were pretty bad.

Still, that they pulled this off at all, let alone this well, is pretty incredible. So happy that this was given to Joss Whedon. I really can't imagine who would have done a better job.

I also liked Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk a lot. Probably my favorite of the three actors who've played him. Ed Norton was too serious and angsty. I imagine they'll do another Hulk movie with Ruffalo before the Avengers sequel.

ruffalo mentioned in an interview that he's signed for a handful of movies, so i'd imagine he pops up in the other sequels too.

Watched Mission Impossible: Ghost Potocol this weekend. I dug it. I actually enjoyed the humor interjected into it. But, like a lot of critics, I did agree that the usage of gadgetry was a bit much, especially considering the whole ghost protocol concept.

Really? Too many gadgets in a Mission Impossible movie?

Considering that the program had been shut down, etc I agreed with a lot of people who felt that they'd be more limited than they seemingly were. What was different between if they were avowed or disavowed? They'd be able to get into a room easier? Meh.

Saw Avengers last night and enjoyed it like everyone else. The set pieces were pretty amazingly directed and I especially dug the Whedon hallmarks: strong female characters, quippy dialogue, and **SPOILER ALERT** that he is not afraid to kill off characters. Just a really fun time at the movies.

well it's OK I suppose, super violent with a lot of guns, broken bones
and some spectacular deaths but kinda left me cold like a corpse
left on the veranda after a rather chilly night in some light drizzle.
Not the best action movie of this year let alone the decade but worth 7/10
if you are a bit pissed.

very disappointing, unfunny, ploddy plot, a dull waste of time really.
Pfeiffer is the best actor in it by far but thats not really saying much.
Suprising how drugs/fellatio/suicide deaths sail by in a 12 certificate film
these days too. If there is more laughter from the audience for a trailer before
the movie starts than during the entire main course then it kinda tells you all
you need to know. The sets are pretty sumptuous though.
5/10

An entertaining waste of time.
A mediocre movie over all, but at least Hulk Smash and Johansson Hot.

Only thing I didn't like about Avengers was that I went to the 3D version which was not worth it. My bad.

I'm pissed that I didn't get to see Raid Redemption. It lasted in our theater here a week, if that.

Saw The Dictator last night.
Not a great movie, but there were some funny bits.

I gratuitously blogged about the movie in a fairly unreadable, unexciting manner, but it gets the gist across...

Most notably is some of the really iffy acting performances, such as Samuel L. Jackson, who has seemed to completely walk through the motions for years now (since The Spirit in 2008). It hurts for me to say that since I still really like Samuel L. Jackson of old, but he feels like a one-trick pony by now.

[snip]

Another weak element of The Avengers is that the movie doesn’t really go into the back story of any of the characters. Sure, there is no time to do so—even as-is The Avengers is nearly two and a half hours. But for someone like me, who hasn’t seen a movie featuring any of the characters other than The Hulk, there were a lot of references that simply confused me.

[snip]

The last weak element that I’m going to touch on—and this is by no means a comprehensive list—is the unexciting nature of the antagonist. There is really only one important antagonist, and though he’s interesting enough he’s more notable for his story and general disregard for humanity. Well, that and the fact he’s trying to summon a big army to squish the Earth. But whatever.

Because the army, while alien, comes across as fairly weak. All the aliens look the same and have the skills of your basic foot army. They are foes en mass, not singular foes with interesting powers. So the later action-packed 1/3 of the movie is watching Captain America toss his gaudy shield at no-name, samey aliens. Meh.

Despite the desperate tone of the movie—The Avengers are our last chance!—I’m fairly convinced that any competent army could have handled the alien army foot soldiers. Superheros should be facing super enemies, and only one is presented.

Six superheroes, one bad guy.

That’s a poor ratio.

I think its safe to say that you're lack of enjoyment was hinged mostly on not being privy to a lot of backstory. I think if you had watched the other films leading up to The Avengers, you would've hopefully enjoyed it much more. That was actually one of the things I enjoyed about the Avengers--that they didn't go back and explain things. It jumped right into the story, albeit a little slowly.
