Bar-Kays: Soul Finger
Debut album of the Bar-Kays, a fantastic instrumental soul band in the mold of Booker T. & the MGs. Another Stax band and the similarities don't end at sharing a label. The original lineup was only together long enough to have issued this album prior to the tragic loss of half its members in the December '67 plane crash that also claimed the life of Otis Redding. These old Stax/Volt LPs are always worth digging into as the less well-known tracks not generally anthologized are often every bit as good as the more familiar songs. And yes, that vinyl is original.

I think these songs are meant to be heard in a live setting, and it's a good album.

Listen Here: http://candyappleandthebuddies.bandcamp.com/

They're a Nashville band. For some reason I think Pete Cockroach would like this, and RIYL bar rock, garage-punk fans who also like the Pogues or other punk-inspired folk.
Lyrically it's a bunch of songs to listen to over cheap beer written from the perspective of your favorite dive bar bartender who also sings for the most popular band at said dive bar. Other descriptions/musings about them can be found at their Facebook page

Tracklist
1.The Admiral
2.A Lifetime at Best
3.Let's Get Happy
4.I Hope You Don't Die Before Me
5.All The Beer is Gone
6.Times Are Rough
7.Going Nowhere
8.I Got Drunk
9.Marianne
10.Kathleen, Please Come Home
11.Catching Bones On a Saturday Night
12.Home, James

At one of my old jobs, I guess that the predecessor in my position was Rennie Sparks. Never met her, but everyone there seemed to really love her.
Kinda weird.

Yeah, they seem like nice folks from my limited meet and greet experience at this past year's Solid Sound Festival.

Always love some Handsome Family. Through the Trees and Twilight are all time favorites of mine that get played frequently. They played a good show at the St. Louis Art Museum this past fall and it was a really nice show. Didn't talk to Renee, but Brett before the show was pretty funny. Just saddled up to the bar and spent most of the time comparing the various drunk driving laws from various states.

Anyway...for me this morning:

The Books: The Lemon of Pink
I guess I have seen this called folktronica, whatever that means. Lots of found sounds recorded and mixed with gentle electronic flourishes and an occasional plucked instrument. Anyway, this is the second album and for me the first two are the ones that matter with this group. They were a great case for me of be careful what you ask for. I liked the first two, but always kind of thought just a tad bit more structure and they'd be even better. Well, eventually they added a bit more structure and for me they lost the fractured charm of this album and Thought for Food. I always like the way these albums sound in nice weather with the windows open so the sounds around kind of blend in with the recordings. Looks like these have recently been remastered and re-released, but the original vinyl on Tomlab sounds just fine to me.

2 3 new Kelly Hogan singles. Really like Plant White Roses. 2nd & 3rd are kinda meh. This does not bode well for the new record imo.
