Cannot fucking WAIT for the new one. Wife refers to him as "that canadian guy you have a crush on."

going to be seeing Daniel here in about 2 hours

the Athens guys will be interested to know that New West now has an offshoot imprint called Normaltown Records (office is on Meigs St). Undoubtedly created so they could use free labor/interships of kids going through the UGA Music Business certificate program which receives major funding from George Fontaine Sr, owner of New West and UGA alumnus. His son, Fontaine Jr (UGA '04) now runs New West's Athens office.

Daniel Romano is making country music. He is currently working on his 3rd album, which will be released on Normaltown Records later this year. The new project follows two critically acclaimed records Sleep Beneath The Willow and Workin’ For The Music Man. Daniel has a platinum record for his production work with City and Colour and a Juno Nomination for graphic design. For the past seven years he has performed in the critically acclaimed rock band, Attack in Black.

EDIT: COMPLETELY missed billyg's post on the prior page, but I'll just leave this info up for shits and giggles

Not much I'd rather do in this world than watch Daniel Romano play in Athens GA. Fuck.

I love that Daniel's Aunt/Uncle posted on the first page of this thread to respond to us and help promote his last record.

Worth leaving up, because I did not know that the guy who started New West was a UGA alum, Stu.

Daniel was all dappered-up in a nudie suit and it was just him and his guitar with a fella playing pedal steel. His voice sounds great live, very rich and clear. I don't have a setlist or anything, but he played a few tunes from the Willow and a couple of new tunes. Judging by the new tunes, the new album will continue the vintage country sound of Willow.
Found out that he's managed by the same ladies that manage The Sadies. Wish they'd do a US tour together. I'd be all over it. I spoke to Daniel after the show and he was an affable guy, but said the whole showcase atmosphere was a little awkward. It always is, but this one was a little less stuffy with free beer and BBQ provided by New West.

Or that he gave his kid an awesome make-work job running the jernt.

Daniel Romano at Lee’s Palace in Toronto 7/14/12

The last time I’d seen Daniel Romano was right here at Lee’s Palace, but that was five years ago and he was fronting Welland rock act Attack In Black and opening up for Built To Spill. I knew that he’d gone solo in a different direction since then, but it was still something to see him take the stage in full cowboy regalia – okay, no spurs or chaps – with the songs to match. Johnny Cash and Gram Parsons were obvious reference points and while formidable ones, Romano’s slow, hurting songs didn’t pale for the comparison. He wasn’t quite able to win the full attention of the audience at first, but as their performance went on, the floor steadily filled up and by the time a couple began slow dancing at the foot of the stage, their set could be marked in the ‘win’ column.

The video is a studio-made video of the song, and it's... kinda bad. Yikes.

I should clarify - I get the concept, and I don't want a Nashville video, but I have a hard time imagining anyone seeing this and going "yeah!" or wanting to explore him further, unless they just listen to the incredibly good song. And at that point, why make a video?

Well, that stinks. I was hoping it would be a live performance. I came across it this a.m. looking for news on the new record. The vid is blocked here at work. Thanks for saving me the trouble.

Summary for mcap - Each verse he progressivley sings while dressed as each of the stages of human evolution. First in a pretty bad Planet Of The Apes style costume, then cave man, etc. All deadpan, looking forlorn, in a dimly lit set looking like a Natural History Museum display.

Sadly your link is flash-based, and this laptop is flashtarded (and not updatable).

Ugh,
Thanks for the summary Cap'n.

For the most part, I cannot stand studio contrived videos. I mean, full on hatred. What the hell does evolution have to do with the pain and conviction delivered in that song? So, does an ape "kneel down by baby's bedside, and apparently, graze her lily face?!?

I finally got a chance to see him live a few weeks ago and I guess not surprisingly, I was really impressed. I actually hadn't liked the handful of youtube videos of live performances that much so I had rather tempered expectations but he was really great. His voice really shined and his steel guitar player was awesome -- every bit as good as Greg Leisz. He didn't play much of Sleep beneath the Willow but played a lot of the new record along with a bunch of songs I'm pretty sure that I've never heard before so I'm guessing that he has most of album 4 already written. If so, its just as good as the new one. He was the opener for Caitlan Rose and I don't think many in the crowd knew him but I think he won over most of the audience and he really brought down the house when he closed with a George Jones cover (this was shortly after GJ passed away).

Yeah, he's great live. I had him open and back Wanda Jackson last year, and this week I have him and the Trilliums opening for Shooter Jennings in NYC, RVA and D.C.. I'll see him at Bonnaroo in a few weeks, which will be the 4th time seeing him live. He and the Trilliums are all polite Canadians.

billyg, thanks again for the introduction to him.

I finally began to love Come Cry with Me after about 10 listens.
