Saw this last night in IMAX 3D. If you're going to commit 2-and-a-half hours or your time and any of your money to seeing this, you might as well get the full experience.

It's visually excellent. Every single visual aspect of this movie was perfect except for one thing: Guy Pearce made up to look like an extremely old man. I cannot figure that one out.

There was a lot of this move that I couldn't figure out but not because it was confusing or convoluted or overly dense or anything like that. There were just some perplexing choices made in terms of character behavior and motivations and the general underlying themes. It was weirdly anti-science for a sci-fi movie. A lot of vague pseudo-spirituality which I guess can probably be blamed on Lindelof. The moral of this movie seemed to be that evolution is bullshit AND there is no god. I mean, I realize it's just fleshing out and further building up a make-believe universe, and reading too much into it is silly. It just struck a really strange tone, and it sort of seemed to be inviting analysis of those pseudo-religious themes and ham-fisted "big questions" when it really shouldn't.

I had a good time, though. A movie like this doesn't need character development (sorry, but I don't think about Alien or Aliens in terms of their character arcs), and I thought there was enough suspense and momentum to carry it through. I was a little detached from the fate of the characters, sure, but I also found several of them plenty likable. Fassbender was excellent, as everyone has said, and I found myself kind of rooting for him to keep things interesting, which he did. (Like it almost felt like the audience should want him to cause trouble and be a dick, just to make something happen.) Idris Elba was great, but his character was almost sadly stereotypical. I actually really liked Charlize Theron in this, too.

Full of flaws, but worth seeing for the visuals, Fassbender, and the connections with the Aliens movies.

Guy Pearce was an old man to fit into the Weyland timeline. You need to see the viral TED video of the younger man (Weyland) who is building the initial stages of a space faring human race, and including, terraforming. He was desperate to maintain his life, and his power.

i just wanted to see a good movie, not buy into a new franchise. i was not intrigued, suspended or surprised by anything they showed me. i really wanted to like it, and i did not go in thinking it would be just like alien, but rather that it would have some of the same depth.

for instance, i dont need the character to read me (word for word) what the screen is showing me, i hate conventional foreshadowing (which this thing is FULL of), i felt nothing for any of the characters, i hate the mindless banter...anyway, its the most visually appealing movie ive seen in awhile, but I feel like maybe that is the easy stuff nowadays??

I'll agree that the characters aren't exactly the kind of people you "feel" something for...but that's not why I went to see this movie. I went to see this because it was going to be visually really cool, exciting, and suspenseful. And it hit all those marks for me. I didn't think it would be a perfect movie, and it wasn't, but it was pretty great, and that's all I can ask for out of a summer blockbuster type movie.

this is a pretty good, somewhat long, read.

http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/804 ... -franchise

i enjoyed it a lot. didn't really read too much into the creationism stuff. i thought fassbender, theron and rapace were great. elba was good but his role wasn't that fleshed out. that one dude looks a lot like tom hardy. and yeah, old man pearce was just kind of weird looking. it's kind of neat going back and reading about how this falls into the alien timeline and such. it's not as good as the first two but it's better than any of the others, though i have a soft spot for alien3. it'll be interesting to see if they do a sequel.

also, the film looked great but they really need to stop putting shit out in 3D.

I had sworn off 3D before seeing this and was determined to see it in regular 2D, but my friends wanted to do IMAX 3D so I gave in.

The 3D in this was done really well. I still don't want to see any more 3D movies, but for things like this and Avatar that are pretty much pure visual spectacles and are actually shot for it, I guess it makes sense.

The 3D trailer for the new Spider-Man movie looked AWFUL.

This is ridiculous. The what? Why is that something anyone who sees this movie should care about? Weyland's motivations are one of the least interesting aspects of this whole story.

This video sucks. The David one was awesome, but this is some of the cheesiest, hokey-est acting I've ever seen from Guy Pearce. It doesn't help that everything that came out of his mouth was such silly grandiose garbage.

I can't believe that this casting and costume/makeup choice in an otherwise excellently cast and visually perfect movie was made to preserve continuity with such an inconsequential, unnecessary (but obviously big budget) viral video.

Jeez, you guys are rough. I thought the viral marketing for Prometheus was among the best I have seen. The videos actually added a lot of value to the experience for me at least.

The David one, sure. I didn't like that Weyland one, though.

I think a lot of us just really had unrealistically high hopes for this movie, but also some aspects of it were so extremely well crafted that it made the weak parts all the more frustrating.

I'll reiterate that I really enjoyed it.

I have been reading commentary from the writer and Scott this week... praying for the sequel. Apparently, the original script was "Alien Zero" and would have been the true prequel, but Scott decided that he wanted to go in an alt direction. I think with worldwide box office in the 160M range, it's looking good for a sequel if Scott doesn't die first, and there are rumblings of a Blade Runner sequel too.

That's awesome. I would have left that in.

I enjoyed it, but thought they should have called it "Mr. Burns Goes to the Moon."

I hope The Simpsons do a parody of it in the next "Treehouse of Horror" with Burns as Weyland and Smithers as David the Android.

this lindelof quote made me loller:

Quote:
"there was originally a post-credits scene where Fassbender eats shawarma, but when he swallows, it comes out of the hole in his neck."
