I continued this debate at the bar last night with a buddy. Unfortunately we both came to the sad conclusion that Aerosmith probably would win, if a national vote was held.

It does seem weird that so many of the big ones for American music were solo artists. But lots of good picks here, Ramones, Talking Heads, Velvet Underground, Stooges, CCR, and others mentioned are really good choices. Wish I had someone overlooked to mention, but most any I'd pick have already been mentioned. I could maybe toss out a personal favorite like the Minutemen. I think they were both good, actually started to sound accessible on their last couple releases and were influential in their own way. If I liked all their albums as much as I liked the first two, I'd nominate Gun Club. I think including Nirvana in the argument is totally legit.

But yeah, I'd have to give something to the Motown groups. I guess since they were singing groups and not playing interments makes a difference, but The Temptations, Supremes, Booker T & the MGs are all great choices. I'd also toss out The Impressions, even without Curtis Mayfield's solo work, their stuff as a group was fantastic and the group also spawned another star in Jerry Butler.

I think these arguments get easier to throw out older bands both because we already have generations of praise to hang a hat on, but also because the further you go back, music was less splintered and influences easier to measure.

Yeah, I think that's (your last comment) what swayed me on my decision. If I look at the American band I listen to most and probably enjoy the most it would likely be Devo, followed closely by The Replacements. But I guess I took into account influence a lot (not that those two bands weren't influential) and volume of work into consideration in a big way. VU were hugely influential, but only put out 4 albums (unless you count Squeeze, then 5), the Stooges put out 3 (until recently), and Nirvana put out 3 studio albums. This is what makes the debate interesting to me: how you weigh influence, longevity/volume of work, greatness of work, and what they mean culturally.

my first thoughts are CCR and the Grateful Dead

I'm glad motown and stax and others didn't play by the rules of what we now think of as a band but it makes these kinds of discussions tricky.

My visceral gut reaction would be The Ramones but I fully recognize the lack of mainstream appeal in the debate.

But reading this, makes me think more intellectually about it. Weighing all of those factors, I think a case could be made for Pearl Jam.

I honestly think they score high in all categories and the only thing going against them is the lack of historical context that a band like The Beach Boys, The Byrds, or the Velvet Underground does.

I'd be curious to know how an 18 year old views Pearl Jam today (aka someone who wasn't even born when "Ten" came out)

Thinking of the Motown/Stax artists makes me think of whether artists like the Beastie Boys and Public Enemy should be considered.

if James Brown didn't fire his whole band ever four years I'd say him, but he's not a band.

PE were important to some, but they never meant shit to me.

rap groups that mean more to me, off the top of my head:

Tribe Called Quest
Brand Nubian
Gang Starr
Outkast
Wu Tang

Before reading through the thread my first thought was CCR. Of course I wouldn't deny The Grateful Dead a place on here either.

VU is certainly in the discussion, and I think Outkast needs to be mentioned (as Jewelz already did)

Speaking of which, I was in Minneapolis for a wedding last weekend and Steven Tyler (and presumably the rest of Aerosmith) were staying at our hotel. People were outside waiting to spot a glimpse of him for hours and hours. I know he's on American Idol and all, but it was a little surprising how crazy people were going.

Nirvana. They were the band that got me into music back when I was 13 and influenced me to find out about all of his influences, etc. There are tons of bands that sound similar/ were influenced by them, and Kurt is still a cultural icon. I mean even rappers name drop Kurt, which I don't hear happen to other rockers.

CCR or Tom Petty I guess, though he's disqualified, right?

Clealy it's all subjective but for me, Nirvana meets all requirements except longevity and volume of work. Only 3 proper studio albums and for most of the world they're only aware of 2. (not counting Unplugged)

They didn't get the chance to go too long and put out crap, like other people mentioned here did.

even when he does a solo albums he uses the Heartbreakers, so I think he qualifies.

Then today I say Petty.

Over Springsteen & The E Street Band?

I mean, I still stand by my original pick, but...
Really?

For me, yeah. Always liked Petty better.

Somebody could probably beat that opinion out of me over a beer or two, but right now I just like Petty more. Probably not thinking it through very well.

My main beef with choosing Petty would be the greatness of work. There is no doubt that his Anthology of hits takes a back seat to no one (well, almost) but for every couple of singles on an album, he had a LOT of filler. Particulary the mid-to-late 80's albums.

Longevity seems like a fairly pointless criteria. Even the Beatles were only around for 7 years. As well, longevity and volume of work are requirements that cancel each other out (ie: because of their longevity, bands like the Beach Boys and Grateful Dead put out far more embarrassing horseshit than anything approaching good).

Longevity of influence is what I look at. If the Ramones had put out those first four albums and then died collectively in a fiery pizza explosion their importance and influence would have been exactly the same as we know it now. They weren't considered in this thread because they toured behind "Pet Semetary" (I hope), they're mentioned because that first flash of genius still has an obvious influence on our pop culture landscape.

Maybe, but would we have remembered the Stones as fondly had they dismantled prior to '68?

They might've only been remembered in same light as say, The Animals. But I concede your point.

Golfclap, oldboy.
