Here's one I've been listening to a LOT lately- Downefall's Dead Carnival disc. Something for everyone with heavy & melodic vocals, progressive at times, rippin' solos, with their old-school metal influences on their sleeves. Young guys, too.

http://www.myspace.com/downefall <------ songs here are not from the disc I have. Even if you don't like these, try the disc I've uploaded.

i have the vinyl already. no need to double dip.

Did the pre-order with autographed booklet thru Newbury Comics. Don't know if I can wait, though.

I found the older records to be somewhat unlistenable. I like heavy with hooks and choruses.
I'll revisit them now that I have somethin invested in the band.

I wasn't nuts about early mastodon either until "the hunter" hooked me.

I have the limited edition double vinyl coming to me in the mail. So, I'm gonna be pissed if the Baroness album is as bad as some people are saying. I am willing to give them the benefit of the doubt at this point, though. I certainly don't need it to be super "Tower Falls" heavy but that Eula song posted on Pitchfork did worry me a little. I like Take My Bones Away, though.

The new Gojira is excellent by the way...

I had all the previous Baroness releases (they are either in a box in my garage or I sold em), but after two listens it does sound like the band made a conscious decision to go in a more mainstream direction. Band has paid its dues. They have their core cult following. In my book, they've earned the right to go after a bigger audience. Sometimes you have to risk pissing off your core to be able to move forward. RecOrd is solid in my opinion!

I'm hoping for both, and this should put Savannah more on the cultural map as being an epicenter of something other than Old South nostalgia.

There will be plenty of backlash (see Dale), but I'm all for progression. I too am a fan of hooks/melody mixed with loud, crunchy guitars.

If we're making the comparison to another Southern metal band that went from "brutal" to "more palpable", my favorite Mastodon record is Crack the Skye, but The Hunter fell flat with me.

I may agree with you Stu, re: Mastodon.

Being in the metal biz, I, at one point, heard and/or owned everything Mastodon ever did, but it never clicked with me....So they were discarded, deleted, or sold back.....'The Hunter' won me over in a big way, and I went back and found appreciation in the older records and actually enjoyed hearing the progression in the band.....I now have re-purchased the entire Mastodon catalog and enjoy them immensely....

This is how i think Baroness will play out....I;ll eventually re-acquire the Blue & Red records, and will fall in love with them too.

I loved the direction they hinted at in Blue and I'm hoping Yellow & Green is the result.

these guys haven't progressed at all with this album. in fact, they've turned into some awful radio rock band. it's void of anything creative. oh, and the production is dreadful.

i love this band, and cannot get into this at all.

Mares of Thrace have been putting hair back on my lower legs that my diabetes has been shedding.....good stuff!

Quote:
DECIBEL MAGAZINE: "8/10... The Pilgrimage is the best kind of sophomore outing: same man-eating, fire-spitting Mares, now with razor hooves and venomous spines for a mane"

METALSUCKS: "This album rules... hard-hitting, sludgy noise rock full of nightmarish riffs and venomous, seething vocals"

THISISNOTASCENE: "9/10... Dare I say Canada’s #1 metal album of the year for a second time?"

DOOMMANTIA: "9.5/10... Another essential, formidable release for 2012 that knocks most other bands into the dirt"

MAGNET MAGAZINE: "8/10... a much busier, more dynamic effort than its predecessor; one that never fails in its considerable ambition"

AXISOFMETAL.COM: "8.5/10... If you’re a sucker for that doom and sludge combination or crave that dark and evil atmospheric sound while also demanding some technicality, then there really is no reason to not pick up 'The Pilgrimage'."

it's on Spotify.... http://open.spotify.com/album/0sivyew07bUsuAUpPQWLWs
