Barry Adamson.
Definitely.
Original Bad Seed. Founding member and original bassist for Magazine.
Hard to describe, impossible to categorize, and always interesting.

For reference sake, here is the AllMusic overview:
Quote:
Barry Adamson's work as a bassist for Magazine and Nick Cave's Bad Seeds gave little indication of the complex, cinematic works he has composed as a solo artist. After leaving the Bad Seeds in 1987, Adamson decided to follow the path of film composers like John Barry, Ennio Morricone, and Bernard Herrmann, whose work had intrigued him since childhood. His first full-length album, 1989's Moss Side Story (he had released one previous EP in 1988), was a tour de force, blending post-punk, industrial, spy guitar, and various classic movie composer quotes into a seamless 54-minute soundtrack to an ominous film noir that didn't exist. This recording led to Adamson's work on soundtracks for actual films in the early '90s, including Delusion, Gas Food Lodging, and Shuttle Cock. Adamson also continued to compose quasi-cinematic recordings for imaginary films like 1996's Oedipus Schmoedipus, although none have matched the sustained excitement of Moss Side Story. As Above, So Below followed in 1998 and a best-of compilation titled The Murky World of Barry Adamson appeared a year after that. Adamson returned in 2002 with The King of Nothing Hill, his first collection of new material in four years. Stranger on the Sofa followed in 2006, Adamson's first for his Central Control International imprint. Back to the Cat, his second album for the label, was released in March 2008. Its title track was used in the popular video game Alan Wake. He also took part in the first of the Howard Devoto's Magazine reunions in 2008, completing one tour before leaving again to concentrate on his own music. In 2010 he issued the digital-only single "Rag and Bone." It was released in physical form as a 12" single in 2011. Adamson followed the single with his next full-length, I Will Set You Free, on his Central Control International label. It was released on Valentine's Day in 2012, followed by a world tour.

Falling into all out reggae mode lately. Ordered a couple stacks of things and the trio getting the most attention include the 10" Dancehall Showcases I & II from Sugar Minott, Horace Andy's Dance Hall Style and Niney the Observer's Sledgehammer Dub is blowing me away.

Also obsessed with hunting down some newer reggae but I really just don't find much I like, too tinny and digital sounding and too much dancehall/hip-hop hybrids. Last new reggae albums I think I really enjoyed were Damian Marley's Welcome to Jamrock and Sizla's Watershed Redemption. Suggestions welcome.

back when I was buying reggae 45s one of my favorites was Junior Kelly, he tended to have more organic samples. Off the top of my head I also like

Luciano
Buju Banton
Capleton
Glen Washington
and you already mentioned sizzla

but I stopped being on top of things like ten years ago, so my definition of "new" is debatable.

I'll have to check some of those out. Buju Banton I've liked some stuff from and Capleton has been hit or miss for me, mostly just kind of decent but nothing that really captured me, same with Luciano. I'll definitely look into Junior Kelly and Glen Washington, haven't listened to them.

And dance-hall style, this one (make sure you got some bass response to listen or it won't work)

Second one's a good track, I like both Beenie Man and Barrington Leny.

Grimes is my favorite album so far this year, and both "Genesis" and "Oblivion" get stuck in my head quite a bit.

This new Stars song has been on repeat all day.

I posted a link to it on Facebook and and was mocked by an old high school friend "Umh?? LOL...Do you listen to nickleback as well?", Interesting comparison.

I like it. Shows promise and I pretty much wrote them off after 5 Ghosts.

Renewed my Fairport Convention obsession a little bit with the Live at the BBC box set and the first Sandy Denny solo album. The box set is kind of overkill, but the Sandy Denny album is great.

Just thinking of Nickleback as the RIYL for Stars. That's it.

DW, have you listened to Midnite? I recommend their debut from 1999, Ras Mek Peace, but the latest from this year is sounding pretty good too (been listening to it a bit on Spotify).
