I don't really understand how the O's are still in it. Their starting pitching isn't that good. Adam Jones, Matt Weiters and to a lesser extent Markasis and Hardy are good players, but the offense isn't that great either. They have a negative run differential and their pathegorian record suggests they "should be" ten games under .500 rather than ten games over. I assume they must have a great record in close games. I still wouldn't bet on them making the playoffs though. They play a lot of games against fellow AL East teams the rest of the way and also play Texas and Detroit. Showalter deserves a lot of credit though and whether they make the playoffs this year or not, they have a bright future.

This is why I love baseball. Despite what the statistics say a team or player should be, sometimes it doesn't line up. They've been a lot of fun to watch, and heck, even when we lose (f'instance last night in the blown call in Detroit), its fun to watch them get fired up. This team wants to shock the mlb establishment. We'll see how it goes. I'm impressed with Machado's development. I had to eat crow after his first few games. Thought they brought him up too soon, but he seems to be acclimating pretty well.

There has been limited talk of Bundy coming up in September. Don't know how I feel about that.

O's are impressive this year. That blown call was pretty egregious. I've never seen a overturning of a called out like that, especially when the first plate ump was right on top of the play.
One thing I love about the Tiger's broadcast team, Mario Impemba and Rod Allen, is how impartial they usually are. They obviously root for the Tigers, but their first loyalty is to the game of baseball. They sounded as shocked as the O's that the call was changed. I have found that some other broadcast teams in other cities are much more biased when it comes to close plays. My favorite line of theirs was "Where was that call two years ago, for Galarraga?"

So the Astros dump Mills to complete the house cleaning. Makes sense to dump a manager for not winning when he's trying to win with a roster of AA players, right?

Unfortunately, I do. Although in the Tiger's case, I think newly hired GM and President Dombrowski would have canned just about any manager. You can't muck out the stables if the horses are still inside.

He played second-base & they called him Scrap-Iron. So, I think we know the future of current scrappy middle-infielders David Eckstein & Dustin Pedroia: long-term managerial failure.

Let's hope so. Rangers have been limping along for months now, so we don't need Oakland making up any more ground in the standings.

If the A's can keep it close (5 games out now), that 3 game series in Oakland to close out the regular season could be a good'un.

A’s Statement Regarding Suspension of Bartolo Colón

OAKLAND, Calif. – The Oakland A’s issued the following statement regarding the suspension of Bartolo Colón:

“The Oakland Athletics are disappointed to learn of today’s suspension of pitcher Bartolo Colón. The organization fully supports Major League Baseball’s Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program and its efforts to eliminate performance-enhancing substances from our game. Per the Basic Agreement, the A’s will have no further comment.”

Seems like LA is trying to copy other big spending teams that fail to win titles.

Go Giants.

I find the treatment of drugs in MLB to be odd and sensational. What, maybe 5 players a year out of probably 800 MLBers test positive and the media can only talk about "the steroid era," but when 2 players on every NFL team are regularly suspended, it's page 6 material.

This is karmic retribution for college upperclassman Jeffrey Meier applying for a job with the O's a coupla years ago.

Also, Rabbit, did you read the Deadspin piece about Jeffrey Meier, insufferable dick baseball camp counselor who cowered at the chance to meet Tony Tarasco while at the camp? JM is every Yankee fan ever. Pompous, preening... overcompensating.

Fuck that shithead. I still say, if not for him, the Yankees don't win one WS in the Torre era. Not one.

O's were primed in the 96 ALCS. I did read that article, and interestingly enough Tarasco was a coach here in Hagerstown for the Nats affiliate Suns. He was really approachable, nice guy.

I expect nothing less from formerly touted Braves prospects.

Except Rocker. Eff that guy. Unless he punches Jeffrey Meier (is it Maier? (I don't care, he desn't deserve proper spelling)) in the balls.

Nothing would please me more than to see a Baltimore/ATL WS. Definitely don't want to see the Nats and their bandwagon fans win.
