Damn, these songs are catchy. "Kinski Assasin" is destined to be stuck in my head for the next 12 months.

deserves it's own thread. my favourite album of the year thus far for sure. bizarre, but not complicated, accessible, but not refined. i'll put it on right now. testicle bombs bombs bombs.

I like it, but I don't think I like it as much as Before Today.

Like it seems really awesome until about 4 or 5 songs in. Then it starts to kind of lose steam, and I feel like I'm listening to a Ween album. That's not a bad thing, but it's not really what I want this to be.

I gave this a try and thought it was turrible. I guess Zappa and Ween are okay comparisons, except it's the moments from Zappa and Ween that are appreciated more for something other than the music.

We will always have... Paris.

same here.

As to Ween comparisons... I can see it, but think Ariel is coming from different side of the warped universe inhabited by The Residents, Ween, Zappa and some obscure "out"-folkies.

Some songs make me smile, but others are just horrible. Schnitzel Boogie, I'm talking to you.

There's no way I could listen to this entire album in one sitting though.

Schnitzel Boogie is a great song. It's got a wicked groove.
I agree with Dalen. Favourite album of the year.

I liked their last one quite a bit and was looking forward to this, but it's not doing a thing for me. Maybe I'll wait and give it another chance after a while. I liked the last one enough to at least give it another listen. Didn't seem horrible or anything on first listen, just kind of nothing to get me interested, more a bland indie pop album with some quirky bits tossed in to try to embellish and make it seem interesting. Eh, maybe I'll change my mind another day.

I loved their last one and am looking forward to hearing this.
But what I really like about this thread is the fact that an "album of the year" is not unanimous. It's a bit of a change from the way that the board was just a few short years ago.

I don't think Dalen has ever agreed with the board on AotY

It's hard to know what you're agreeing with when it changes every week.

And thank you Ariel Pink, for making me walk around for the last week with "Who sank my battleship, I sank my battleship" rattling around in my head.
