I buy cd's. When I want to listen to a certain album or band, I put their cd in my cd player and listen to that. If I'm going out for a while and want some variety, I toss a few extra cd's into my backpack.

Am I the only one who doesn't rip every album they buy immediately to the computer and then re-download them onto some mp3 device and listen to them that way?

Besides that just being a big pain in the ass, I like being able to give one specific album a certain portion of my attention. No jumping back and forth on random between different artists and genres. No kicking into a new song immediately after the last track ends.

Am I old-fashioned or ignorant?

I'd upgrade to an ipod, if only I could afford one!

I've had several minidisc walkmens over the last ten years or so. My current one is pretty battered and the headphones buzz, but I'm in no hurry to replace it because I find I'm listen to my walkmen less and less when I go out. There was a time when I would run home from the train station to get my walkmen if I forgot it - I literally had to have it when I went out. These days I don't bother so much.

As for I-Pods, I'd like one, but I just don't think they are neccessary. Since I don't have £200 to squander on something cool, I won't be getting one. Anyway what's wrong with listening to one just CD? I have the attention span to listen to a whole album if nobody else does these days.

I love having my iPod. Certainly it's a luxury, but it has made it much more easy for me on road trips - it seems easier to protect this hard drive in my pocket than a book of cds left vulnerable in my car. i use a radio transmitter (Griffin iTrip) to connect to my stereo - in cities where there are open fm stations on which to transmit, this is a good option (not so much in places like L.A. or Dallas, where every space on the dial is busy).

I would agree that it is great to spend time focusing on a particular artist or album, but this is pretty easy to do - just put the song you want to focus on in their own playlist, and there you go . . .

two years later, i have no plans of upgrading. when and if my iPod dies, I will replace it with another one - but I hope that is many years down the road. I haven't had any troubles yet with the battery life getting obviously diminished - which is a known issue.

i'll probably buy an iriver h340 whenever i get some money saved up. i'm kinda wishing i didn't give my cassette walkman away now because it's really annoying to have to listen to people sing at work, especially the gay guy i usually work next to who sings showtunes. dude cannot sing either, he's got that stupid vibrato thing going.

You're not ignorant, but I think you're overstating the annoyance of ripping. It takes roughly 5 minutes to rip a CD, at which point you've also got it on your computer, which can be handy if you ever listen to music there. Then, you just sync your ipod, which is hardly a time/effort intensive project. And you can listen to a single album just as easily on an ipod. If you just tell it to play the album, it won't jump to a new song afterward, and if you've got any self-control, you don't have to put it on random. But I see nothing wrong with keeping your discman around for that trip home from the record store. Why can't they live in harmony?!

I listen to CDs due to their superior sound quality. When it becomes possible to store several hundred uncompressed albums on a tiny hard drive for a reasonable price, I'll get an iPod or similar device. Until that time, iPods can take a long walk off a short pier.

I still listen to my cheap-o cd player, but I want some kind of mp3 device. The "need" becomes even more apparent whenever I have to make a long trip. Santa are you listening?

i have discman that's also an mp3 player. usually one disc will suffice while i do 45 minutes of driving throughout the day. if i've got a long trip ahead of me, i could put several albums on one cd-r and go with that.

I used to use a portable cd/mp3 player all the time. Then I did some research on hard drive players. I bought an iRiver H140 because it had features you could never get in a cd based player. And because I use lame to encode my mp3s I can't tell the difference between them and the original cd.

And if I wanted to give one album all of my attention, I can make a playlist so that it stops when that album is done.

I think it comes down to personal preference. I don't look down on someone who uses a cd player, or even another brand of hard drive player. I use what fills my needs the best, and if your needs are met by a cd player then more power to you.

I just banished my Disc*Man to burial in a landfill. It was skipping and scratching my CD, and the Koss headphones thru which I irritated myself got beat to shit while travelling in luggage between Mexico, Spain, and Romania.

But, as it is, if I am out and about, rambling and ogling, I don't need musical interruption.

I have to respect the cock.

The only time I use my portable CD player is when I travel via plane. Maybe if I commuted on a bus or train to and from work, I'd bother with something different or more sophisticated. Though, it might be nice to have when working out. Yet, I find the headphones (or earphones) are annoying and the wires get in the way. Truthfully, I'd rather spend the money on something different.

Your poll options need to be fixed to add: "I don't need an ipod, got better things to spend my money on"

I don't even remember the last time I used my portable CD player...about the only time I need to carry my music with me is at the gym and so I bought one of those tiny 256MB MP3 players...the CD deck in my car plays MP3s, so for road trips I just burn a mix with a bunch of stuff on it

Me too. Except now i am too lazy to use the shitty program my minidisc comes with to make new md's. The only thing I do with it is record some live shows with a mic. It's just easier to burn a cd or mp3 cd and use that in my discman or car.

I only listen to recorded music in my car or at home. I own no portable player of any kind, nor do I have any music stored on my harddrive. And at home I never listen to music on my computer - it's always played on my stereo (through an amp that I bought in '78).

My name is Radcliffe, and I am a Luddite.

Can you discern the sound quality between CDs and higher-end compress files (320kbps MP3s, et al.)? If/when I can, it's only a slight difference and, as a result, extremely tolerable.

I'm a big fan of my iPod. As for file type, I'm an EAC/LAME guy myself, and it's the best compromise I've found between file size and sound quality. The coolness of having 300 great-sounding albums in your pocket cannot be overemphasized.

how about me: i only had a tape player till this year. i FINALLY got a cd walkman a few months ago.

it plays mp3's and i don't use them all that often so i didn't see a huge need to drop the cash on an iPod, though they are cool. I like walking around without music. i was lost in a fog of solidarity all through college and i feel more in touch with the world now that i don't have music blasting in my ears everywhere i go.

I still use my CD walkman all the time...if I had an i-pod Id most likely stop using it...and just keep my cd's for stereo and car use only...I know the i-pods have come dowm in price somewhat...but Im still holding out till they really drop, or untill someone decides to splurge on a gift
