And more importantly why does Johnny Flynn sully himself by continuing to associate with them?

I was listening to the new Mumford album on Spotify just to give them a second chance, mainly because I've been obsessed with Johnny Flynn lately. It's a pretty boring album. They have one trick, which is to layer on more and more folk instruments over the same boring melody, to create this constant loud/soft/loud effect. It's like they're trying to make a folk-rock version of the first Archers of Loaf album, except in a really cloying amateurish way. There's something wrong with their toast.

My sister bought the cd for me a couple christmases ago. Good thing she included a gift receipt - swapped it at Target for the latest Big Boi CD.

It's not rocket science really. I mean, great production, catchy melodies, big choruses, recession era inward looking lyrics, marketable faces, and inoffensive personalities. Recipe for mainstream success.

Right time, right place, right sound.

That and the train tour thing --> they really hit the bulls eye with the "inauthentic authenticity" obsession

I dig them. And, I like their new record even more than their 1st.

But I'm a christian, & they hand out Mumford cds when you get baptized and in welcome bags.

I saw a TV commercial for the new DMB, and I guess it was playing their new single. I thought it was an SNL parody, except that it was funny.

They also did this tour over the summer, which I thought was pretty cool: http://www.gentlemenoftheroad.com/

They have strong ties to Nashville and definitely hang with Gillian Welch/Dave Rawlings and Old Crow Medicine Show to have their Appalachian pastiche rub off onto their West London.

Which, is kinda funny because in some circles OCMS is seen as inauthentic.

when you start allowing wives to pick vacation spots, movies, bars, or concerts...you are in trouble.

i think the new one is actually less accessible, and i think i like it a little more. im pretty unapologetic about liking the first one. its very well done, for what it is. it isnt challenging, by any stretch.

Didn't we have this thread already? More about the general phenomenon of this kind of music, not just this band.

I have a few friends who love them. They're Christians so they get into lyrics and I guess the sweeping drama in how they're presented. I get it, but it doesn't really move me like it does them.

I don't really have a strong opinion either way. It's basically that Glen Hansard shit from Once but with Christian overtones that a lot of people wouldn't necessarily pick up on. I mean I like it better than Glen Hansard at least, who I find to be pretty irritating. But then I probably had to hear that one song from Once way more than I've ever had to hear any Mumford & Sons song, and I'm sure they're at least as cloying as he is.

Really enjoyed that; thanks for posting.

The only Mumford song I remember by title is "White Blank Page," which I heard on a Vancouver radio station a few years ago. It was enough to make me get the album, but none of it stuck. The most vocal fans amongst my friend are Catholics in rural Ohio. I probably would enjoy a live set from them (as I did at Dave Matthew's Wolverhampton gig three years ago). I also think they were a good fit for Arcade Fire's 2010 Hyde Park gig. I'll listen to the new one eventually, but it's not a priority.

Per Drinky's reference to the aforementioned thread, I still wouldn't know a Foster the People song if I heard it.

I called them the West London Avett Bros when they arrived on the worldwide scene with their last album
