Quote:
Searching for Sugar Man tells the incredible true story of Rodriguez, the greatest '70s rock icon who never was. Discovered in a Detroit bar in the late '60s by two celebrated producers struck by his soulful melodies and prophetic lyrics, they recorded an album which they believed would secure his reputation as the greatest recording artist of his generation. In fact, the album bombed and the singer disappeared into obscurity amid rumors of a gruesome on-stage suicide. But a bootleg recording found its way into apartheid South Africa and, over the next two decades, he became a phenomenon. The film follows the story of two South African fans who set out to find out what really happened to their hero. Their investigation leads them to a story more extraordinary than any of the existing myths about the artist known as Rodriguez.

Saw this last night and thought it was great. I know there are some here familiar with Rodriguez and his music.

I had no idea about this guys story. It's amazing. If it was a Hollywood script, the executives would laugh it out of the building because it's so far fetched and ridiculous. If you're a fan of music, comeback stories, or triumphs of the human spirit, you should check it out.

Some great statements about how great art will find an audience and how the best and most lasting art is rarely defined by album sales.

Pretty good shot at a Best Doc Oscar nomination I'd say.

Had a day off with my son. Suggested seeing this one, but he shot this down.
Oh well, he's 13.

I didn't see the movie yet. I figured I was just as happy seeing it on DVD in 6 months to a year. I don't know how the movie paints the search for him and I didn't see that 60 minutes episode. It's true of course that he re-emerged on the scene with reissues back in 2005 and I think the first time I saw him live was probably around that time. It is true however that he had no idea before someone found him and told him that he was very popular in South Africa or that his album was considered a lost classic and fetching $100+ prices from collectors. I heard him say that himself at a concert. My understanding was the "search" for him started in 1997 so unless the film claims that they were responsible for finding him in the last couple of years, I don't necessarily see the contradictions that the blog post you linked is complaining about.

That letter is an extreme take. The movie does make it seem like only a dozen people in the world even knew who this guy was outside of South Africa but it doesn't change the fact that he was absolutely obscure as hell to most people.

Also, the main part of the story ends in 1998 with first shows in South Africa. There is a small denoument at the end but for all intents and purposes that was the payoff. It doesn't try to puport that this is all taking place in 2012.

None of what that letter says changes the fact that it's still an amazing story. At least in my mind.

I saw this today and loved it.

And like billy g suggested, the filmmaker in no way claims to have discoverd Rodriguez in the past few years. All the footage is clearly dated in '97 and '98. I'm not sure what point that blogger is trying to make. He comes off as an idiot.
