What are the scariest movies you've seen?

Someone suggested I watch The Descent tonight. It was pretty great until the monsters showed up then it got lame

Scarriest?
The Exorcist.

My favorite scary movies?
Evil Dead 2
Cabin in the Woods
Yeux Sans Visage
Freaks

And probably some more that other people will mention and I will say, "Oh yeah! That one, too!"

the paranormal activity movies are actually pretty good. the first one anyway.

i always though event horizon was pretty scary. maybe more depressing than scary.

i liked the 2nd a little more than the first only because it didn't have the annoying boyfriend in it. 3rd one is easily the best though. haven't seen the new one.

i had to stop watching Funny Games (1997) mid way through, which i have never done. it's a german home invasion flick a la I Spit On Your Grave, but with a family instead of just a girl.

something about the acting being a little too realistic. there's a scene when the parents are grieving over their son who was just shot to death, and...omg

nope

I'd name a certain Kubrick movie, but I don't want to get sued.

Intrigued, I looked at picking this up used on amazon. Seems there's an American remake by the original director. Can anyone vouch for how it holds up to the original? I'm assuming the original is subtitled.

I've only seen the remake, so keep in mind that I may be speaking out of school here...

Everything I've read says that they're shot-for-shot the same, just with different actors. And in different languages.

Let the Right One In
one of the better ones I have seen in a few years

The Changeling [w/George C. Scott] always gave me chills

The Orphanage and The Others were ok

I thought the remake of The Hills Have Eyes from a few years ago was great. I'd never seen the original so I was horrified with no prior knowledge of what was coming.

The most fucked up flick I've seen in years was Martyrs. Some new post-modern French extremist shit that bordered on torture porn. Disturbed the hell out of me.

Original

I think the remake was Let Me In

was this the one where the children are kept from leaving the house, and the parents create some other fucked up world inside the compound or something, if so, it sounded to whacked for me to check out

edit: I was thinking of Dogtooth

i wanted to hate the remake of Let The Right One In but it was quite good.

also, no one should ever watch A Serbian Film. it just goes way too far.

martyrs is disturbing to say the least. virtually no plot, just 2 hours of torture

just finished funny games. it was ok, way too long though, I was bored through a lot of it. started off good though

let the right one in was probably my top halloween discovery for this year

this year's october marathon:

REC (good)
The Dead Pit (shittily good)
Alice, Sweet Alice (meh)
Suspiria (surprisingly meh)
Let the Right One In (great)
The Dentist (more of a crime drama than horror)
Hour of the Wolf (bergman art house horror. definitely need to be in the right mood)
The Invisible Man (a bucket list movie, otherwise meh)
The Countess (questionable acting...meh)
Texas Chainsaw Massacre: A Family Portrait (forgot I had seen this one before. pretty interesting)
I Spit On Your Grave (the kind of home invasion flick i can stomach, probably because of the revenge chapter)
Funny Games (the kind i can't)
Parents (pretty alright. darker than i anticipated)
The Keep (starts off good, gets dumber)
Bubba Ho-Tep (i actually really liked this one. it's more of a meditation on getting old, set inside a z-grade horror flick, yet it somehow works.)

funny games was terrible, in that i can no longer stomach scenes with kids my son's age getting blown away in front of their parents

Both Let The Right One In and Let Me In are well-done films. I tend to favor the original, though probably because I saw it first. The novel is also worth reading--takes the story much farther.

Original or remake?

Also, if you liked this, The Last House On the Left (original) is a must-see.
