I found a 1945 mercury dime in the construction dirt by my house, in pretty good shape. I got all excited until I found out they were/are pretty common. Still worth around $3, so that's a pretty good find.

Image

Value: As a rough estimate of this coins value you can assume this coin in poor condition will be valued at somewhere around $3, while one in "perfect" condition can bring $30. This price does not reference any standard coin grading scale. So when we say poor, we mean worn more than would be expected from a coin in this age, and perfect meaning it looks "perfect" without flaw and possibly even certified. [?].

Additional Info: 1945 was the last year the Mercury or Liberty head dime was produced. This coin is 90% silver. These coins were minted at 3 locations, but the (p) Philadelphia mint issued some 62% of all dimes this year making these the most abundant.

Numismatic vs Intrinsic Value: This coin in poor condition is still worth $0.66 more than the intrinsic value from silver content of $2.34, this coin is thus more valuable to a collector than to a silver bug. Coins worth more to a collectors may be a better long term investment. If the metal prices always drop you still have a coin that a numismatic will want to buy.

Where was it minted, and do you know how to tell? Choices are Philly (sometimes a small P, sometimes just a blank spot where the mint mark is supposed to be), Denver (D), or San Fran (S, much rarer).

Could have sworn it had an 'S' on it, but as I look at the pics, there's a 'w' there. Stands for wtf?

Here's a pic of the actual dime.

Edit: Here's the 's', on the back. Don't have the coin with me, so had to look at the pics again. Thanks for the input, Cap'n!

No dude the mint mark on those was on the back, and it is indeed a San Fran dime. Pretty cool.

Off! totally kicked ass last night, and Double Negative was fun in a retro hardcore sorta way and the Spits were really good. I wanna hear more from them. Now, I need to get someone to remind me that a man of my advanced age should not get hammered and end up slam dancing with a bunch of kids young enough to be my sons and daughters. I am a little sorry this morning for that, but it beats going to the gym.

Did all the networks pretty much show reruns this past week, in lieu of the Hurricane?

We just got our power back last night and we all psyched to catch up on some TV to find that hulu nor any of our other outlets had any episodes post Oct 28th or so.....

It's funny...My area of NJ was considered the outskirts of the storm, but it is unbelievable the damage that was done to our area...
The night of the storm, the rains nor the winds were not nearly as bad as I have seen us get when a regular storm passes through...

We lost power at about 6pm on Monday night and it came back Friday at 2am....We survived on friends and family in the area who had generators, so we could shower and eat some hot meals...Weather never got too cold, so we could sleep at home. We have the Hybrid car, so we never got into the whole 'getting gas' fiasco....We just made sure that we didn't make any unnecessary travel, as to conserve as much as we could...

Still ton of people of people up here without power, and estimates say it could be near Thanksgiving before 100% of the population is up and running again..Otherwise, things are looking pretty muh normal again...Stores are getting the shelves stocked, more and more gas stations are opening up again which will lighten the tension on people sitting in gas lines for hours and hours...

yeah, pretty much, now I am concerned with getting my sunday papers, a sammich from the store, and watching the Knicks at noon...

One day this week, we are driving into Staten Island to spend the day helping out wherever we can...My wife has been collecting a ton of donations (food and clothes), and we are gonna see what we can do....

yeah, there were some networks that changed their schedules. cbs showed reruns on monday and pushed new episodes back a week. nbc bumped thursday's new episodes to this coming week so they could show monday's "the voice" instead, except they moved the election-related "30 rock" to wednesday. i don't think any cable shows were on different schedules.

Went for a night ride (mountain bikes) with a good-sized group last night and took a few pics. Here's a couple of my faves:

ImageUploaded at Picoodle.com

We were driven to the trailhead in a motorhome stuffed with bodies & bikes. Pretty interesting.
ImageUploaded at Picoodle.com

I was even able to bring my dog (that's Endo in the foreground with her pack on), and she had more energy than I did when all was said & done.

And at the end, a sumptous feast awaited us, including raviolis, mmmmm! And beer!!

Nightriding's great, but you've GOT to have a good light. I didn't. :nono:
