T. Rex: The Slider

The T. Rex album I grab when I feel like I should give Electric Warrior a rest. On rare days I actually may even like The Slider better.

Jürgen Müller: Science of the Sea

A release from last year that I come back to often. Gentle bubbling gurgling analog synth music. Total underwater vibe. Excellent. Makes a really nice companion piece to this year's Sub-aquatic Melodies from Panabrite, actually.

Oh, that last album is
Kids These Days - Traphouse Rock
Jazz/hip-hop/rap band consisting of a bunch of high school-aged kids (maybe they're in college now) who can play their assess off. All organic instruments, male/female singers and a male MC. I saw these guys opening for Raphael Saadiq last year and they are wonderful. This is their debut album, produced by Jeff Tweedy of all people. This is my first listen, but the band, overall, I would recommend for fans of The Roots and Massive Attack. High hopes for this one.

EDIT: "Doo-Wah" cribs/quotes the lead guitar line from "Where Is My Mind?" (on piano) and makes it a part of a soul/rap song. Very cool.

So, most of the way through and this is one of those rare records that is DEMANDING my attention. There is so much going on here. I am loving this. Another contender for my 2012 Top 5, and that is just based on a first listen. Seriously great stuff here.

Stakes out its ground pretty clearly - Dusty Springfield, Dionne Warwicke, Burt Bacharach, 60s mod soul - and generally hits the target. The songs are good enough that they're growing on me a little more with each listen. Probably not Top 20 material, but it's a keeper.

The Darrell Scott is a definite top 10'er for me. Those were first listens to the Billy Don Burns and Turnpike Troubadours but I liked them both especially the latter.

Today

Dean Owens - New York Hummingbird
Aimee Mann - Charmer

Plus 1st listens via spotify

Sean Rowe - The Salesman and the Shark
David Byrne & St. Vincent - Love this Giant
Paul Kelly - Spring and Fall
Lindi Ortega - Cigarettes and Truckstops
Divine Fits - A Thing Called Divine Fits
