Nice. I'm cool with that. Certainly a product in alignment with their general aesthetic.

Hope they got a big fat check.

Also, the craptastic bootleg-looking cover. And, it's apparently already on sale at shows.

it doesn't really seem to be so much a solo album as just recordings of him playing DBT songs by himself

So...John Neff just quit DBT.

You're on all their blogs these days, any word on why?

Unless he shows up playing in some other big band, I'm going to assume it's because it's simply exhausting being in a band with Patterson and Cooley.

I suppose family could be a reason.

I know he's in Shonna's band...so, there could be an album release on the horizon+tour. Haven't heard anything official on why. To be honest, this hit everyone by surprise--even people on the inside.

...and now the bashing on the DBT board starts. I guess a lot of people are taking it that he left DBT to be with Shonna (his gf) and play in her band. Personally, its a bummer but not gonna bash the dude. I think some of it has to do with the timing as well--NYE shows/Athens Homecoming.

Neff was great. Maybe this is an opening for Isbell to come back (not holding my breath)?

I'd also take the pre-SRO lineup of Hood/Cooley/Morgan/Malone/Hicks.

Well, this was taken somewhat recently.

Well, that's the funny thing...the comments rolling in basically are that she's becoming a bigger and bigger part of the story of DBT.

DBT are one of my favorite bands of all time but could it also be possible that Cooley and especially Patterson are obsessive over their "brand" and everything involving all things DBT to the point where "working" for them is miserable?

I could easily seeing them taking a "my way or the highway" tact and Isbell, Shonna, and now, Neff, all taking the highway.

I have no idea but there IS a pattern here.

Don't forget EZB.

Yeah, I dunno. They have a certain idea of what they wanna do and where they wanna go with it. Maybe the extensive touring wore on them, maybe they were upset about the solo stuff. Who knows. If Neff and Shonna are truly an item then, Neff probably left by default. I mean, Shonna isn't exactly hiding her distaste for PH in her recent live songs. It was probably awkward for Neff to be in the band and Shonna be out of there, etc.

I may be in the minority here, but I don't think it's a huge loss. Neff doesn't add that much especially post BTCD. Seeing My Morning Jacket live too made me realize he sort of limited as a pedal steel player. (compared to Carl Broemel at least)

If this isn't an opening for Jason to come back, maybe it can be an opening for a new Jason. The band could definitely use the motivation/competition of a shit hot player and/or songwriter to break some new ground. I'd rather see them get younger instead of older.
