Sun Araw, M. Geddes Gengras & The Congos
FRKWYS Vol. 9: ICON GIVE THANK

Interesting release here. You get a couple younger generation experimental synth musicians working with a legendary reggae vocal group. The result is a bit of a sprawling mess even though the whole thing isn't very long. Just a bit scatter-shot. But, it does click in really well in parts and when it works it works really well. It's not a reggae release, even if the vocals hint at it from time to time. Some dubby influences but musically way more toward the modern synth music direction than anything close to traditional dub. Probably at least worth a listen if either side of the equation appeals to you.

Santigold: Master of My Make-Believe

Mish mash of pop, R&B, retro new wave, reggae and world rhythms. The album cover isn't the only thing that reminds me a bit of Grace Jones. Kind of surprised this isn't getting more attention as it really is a fine album. Probably not the sort of thing that most around here like, but if you dabble in this sort of thing, you should give it a listen.

Saw her live at ACL last year and she was great. Not something I would typically listen to though.
