how's bout

love (take your pick really)
jefferson airplane
tim buckley (once i was and i never asked to be your mountain are real kickers)
Skip Spence's "oar" (whole damn thing is mighty special)
the yardbirds (heart full of soul, over under sideways down, happenings ten years tima ago etc)
the electric prunes
joni mitchell (though blue and ladies of the canyon are both early 70's)
townes van zant (not really poppy, but absolutely beautiful stuff)
the youngbloods
the pretty things

and then there's always your beatlesstonesdylanwhogratefuldeaddoorsledzepcreambowiejanis...

this sounds like its gonna be one hell of a mix, good luck

the skip spence might be a little too "out there" for his mother in law. it's not pop enough. great album though.

and i think emit rhodes should count, sounds like late 60's pop despite its 1970 release date.

it's a weird album, this much is true. I suggested it since syd barrett is also on the table. If you're gonna go crazy one time, you might as well do it twice. The late 60's were great because being weird was being popular, unless the monteray pop documentary has lied to me (or i completely misunderstood it), so i think it's a worthy consideration. Also, as much as i'd like to give up on my future mother-in-law (and i'm not even engaged) i'd like to think they (moms-in-law in general) would give something off beat a real go. They're a strong bunch, right?

Paul Revere and the Raiders "Louie, Go Home"
Dave Clark Five "Bits & Pieces"
The Litter "Action Woman"

Instead of Van Morrison, I'd go straight to Them, probably "Here Comes The Night".

Aces to whomever it was mentioned The Pretty Things

question: is scott walker always really weird, like over the top vocal presentation with schmaltzy orchestration, or is it just the 3 songs i happened to download?

Gonna bump this one, making a new mix. Not for my mother-in-law, but for me...

Would love an upload of a Moby Grape tenner, perhaps?

So far I've got

High Numbers
Sir Douglas Quintet
The Move
Small Faces
Shadows of Knight
Blues Magoos
Silver Apples
Monks
Love

If I can sequence it properly, I'm also gonna throw in more poppy stuff (in contrast to the more rocky/garage stuff above) like:

Billy Nichols
Byrds
Matching Mole
Sagittarius
The Millenium
Harry Nilsson

If I were to do one, the process would be figuring out which 3 songs not to include from the debut album. So my recommendation would be just to get that album which is an all time favorite of mine. I have the follow-up "Wow" which isn't bad but not at all in the league of the debut. 20 Granite Creek is the only other album with the full lineup but it was a reunion album and I've never heard it. FWIW, AMG seems to like it.

Your bumping this thread reminded me that the Left Banke reformed last year. I don't think there has been any discussion of that yet. I know they played a few east coast shows last summer and there was some talk of a tour and going into the studio but I haven't seen any further news and their website doesn't either.

Yeah I may pick up the debut, as everything I've heard from it I like. Wasn't sure if the rest of their output was as consistent.

I've probably listened to the July album (released '68) more than any other this year. As is traditional with British psychedelic music there are a couple of silly tracks on it but it has a solid spine. That said the single versions of 'Dandelion Seeds' and 'The Way' are noticeably rawer, and therefore better in my view, than the album versions.

The drummer Tom Newman is freakin' great and Tony Duhig is a great guitar player. He gets a great psychedelic, but still natural and not too distorted, sound out of his guitar.

This was their most lauded track from the album but I like 4 or 5 other tracks as much if not more. If you don't like late 60's psychedelia then you won't like this but for me this is top 10-15% of that particular period and genre.

I'm assuming you posted a song/link? I will listen when I get home! I'm thinking about cutting out all the poppy stuff but that means I'll need another 6 or so psych-rock-garage tracks.

Also, what's up with Traffic? I don't think I've ever thought about what they might sound like in the years I've seen their albums floating around, but I wasn't thinking it sounded like this:
