Jazz Great Dave Brubeck Dies 91

Hartford, Conn. (AP) -- Pioneering jazz composer and pianist Dave Brubeck has died.
Russell Gloyd, Brubeck's manager, says he died Wednesday morning of heart failure, after being stricken while on his way to a cardiology appointment with his son. He would have turned 92 on Thursday.
The Dave Brubeck Quartet's pieces such as "Take Five" caught listeners' ears with exotic, challenging rhythms and
became enduring standards. In 1954 he was the first modern jazz musician to be
pictured on the cover of Time magazine. The quartet's 1959 album "Time Out" was the first ever
million-selling jazz LP. "Take Five," a cut from that album by saxophonist Paul Desmond, became the group's signature theme.

Damn. 91. Nice run.

I respect his place not only in Jazz but in music in general but I've never really enjoyed "Time Out". Not because it isn't great it's that it's became such a ubiquitous part of world culture at this point.

It's impossible to hear it how people originally heard it.

I was thinking the same headline when I heard the news.
RIP.

Saw him twice live, and he was slick. Never forgot that music should have melody that the audience can hang a hat on.
