More than in any other year, I didn't really make that much of a concerted effort to stay on top of new releases. I'd probably only heard about 20-25 albums at most through mid November. I wasn't really sure I even cared to but the hidden music nerd in me got the better of me the last few weeks and I've been mostly listening giving first listens to things I hadn't heard yet. Here's some quick first impressions:

Really Liked/Bought

• Turnpike Troubadours
• Gretchen Peters
• Sean Rowe
• Macaco
• Andrew Combs
• Fresh & Onlys
Jessie Baylin

Also Really Liked/Will Probably Buy

• Bongo Botrako
• John Fullbright
• Barna Howard
• Royal Headache (guess this was 2011 but I found it while reading 2012 best ofs so I'm including it here anyway)
Spirit Family Reunion

Worth more Listens

• Rachel Brooke
• Lindi Ortega
• Father John Misty
• Green Pajamas
• Paul Kelly
• Billy Don Burns
• Ed Kuepper
• Chuck Prophet
• Johnny Dowd
• Maui y los Sirenidos
• Bob Mould
• JOSÉ EL CHATARRA
• Terry Malts
• Curumin
• Calima

The Great Unknowns
Sera Cahoone
Barry Adamson
Wanderlust
Doug Moreland
Bap Kennedy

I've spun that Bob Mould a bunch and I think it holds up. Not just a "return to form," it's got a bunch of solid songs.

That's good to hear.

In response to Toots, its all guitar. No electronica all.

My initial impression was that ie best thing he's done in a long time. Take this with a grain of salt because its only based on one listen but I think its probably better than all of the Sugar output (which I liked but not enough to keep). Its at or near the top of the worth more listens. My reluctance to buy it without more listens is mainly that its not stylistically my sweetspot anymore and i want to make sure my initial impression wasnt grading it on a curve against his recent output.

Did you check out that Cate Le Bon? What was your response to that?
Barry Adamson?

I respect your opinion, even when we don't agree, and am curious to hear your thoughts on two of my faves from 2012. Especially since they seem to be the type of thing that you might like.

interesting. I've taken both for granted for different reasons, Troubadours - they're on a similar touring circuit as some bands I book and haven't really bothered to listen because I assumed there were just another Texas/Oklahoma Red Dirt band that weren't anything special. Andrew Combs - I've seen him live once and enjoyed it, but because I consider him a local artist, I haven't bothered to listen to his album. Both excuses are unfair to the artists, and it sounds like I need to change this and quickly.

Unless something dramatically changes John Murry will be #1 on my year-end list if I make one. This thread is just initial reactions to stuff I've first heard during the last couple of weeks while trying to dive much deeper into 2012 releases.

Its on spotify so give it a listen and decide for yourself. No NQ Arbuckle this time - solo with some contributing guests so it's more sparse and mellow than that last one. It didn't make much of an impression on me, but that was based on one listen at relatively low volume and without my full attention. I just didn't hear enough to want to stick with it any further but I wouldn't want to dissuade anyone from giving it a chance.

I haven't heard them Todd. Was there a reason that you thought that they seem to be the type of thing that I might like? Tell me more. I know who Barry Adamson is but have never checked him out. I don't even know who Cate Le Bon is.

Cate Le Bon sounds a bit like Nico fronting Stereolab. Not totally sure if that one would appeal to you, but it is one of my favorites of the year (and Head Gardener's too, I believe). If you have not heard her first album, then it might take a couple of listens to grow on you, but once she does, she gets under your skin... in a good way.

Barry Adamson is a bit of a chameleon—part jazz man, part soundtrack composer, part pop (the good kind). His earlier stuff was a bit more esoteric; soundtracks for movies that only existed in his head, and such. This new album taps more into his song-oriented side and has some of his best SONG songs. Dark, but enjoyable as all hell.

Ok, I've added that Barry Adamson to the list of things to check out. I have no idea whether it's my sort of thing from that description or not. The fact that it's a little more "song oriented" a least tells me that I should probably stear clear of a lot of his work. That Cate Le Bon doesn't sound like something I'd like much at all so I'm gonna skip that one. Never liked Stereolab at all.

Nope...just heard the NQ Arbuckle one and this new one. Maybe I'll check that one out...focused on 2012 at the moment though.

The new one's pretty good. "Old Whores" is a great song. She's reached a point where her serious songs work much better than her jokey ones, so it takes a couple spins to sink in.

I like it and will definitely give it more spins. Some good stuff on here (couple clunkers too).

Two? Really?
Hell, I only knew about I Will Set You Free.
AllMusic Wrote:
In the four years since Barry Adamson issued the tour de force that was Back to the Cat, he's participated in at least one Magazine reunion tour. He was an original member before leaving to join the first version of Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds. Adamson's influence is clearly felt on their first three albums and singles. I Will Set You Free purposely evokes the swaggering, sleazy rock & roll of the Bad Seeds and the restrained menace of Magazine's post-punk moodiness -- as well as other stops along his idiosyncratic musical journey. Though he doesn't emphasize the imaginary soundtrack moves of his early records, it doesn't mean they aren't here -- check "The Trigger City Blues," with its spooky organ and sound effects (breaking glass, ringing telephones, etc.). Adamson kicks off the ten-song set with "Get Your Mind Right," fueled by a throbbing, rumbling, distorted bassline that recalls the early Bad Seeds. He also cops part of the Rolling Stones' "Street Fightin' Man" lyrically and melodically at the end of each line in the refrain. "Black Holes in My Brain" is a fingerpopping shuffler that evokes Adamson's trademark lounge lizard persona as well as his deep love of swinging, bluesy jazz, though he undergirds it all with his thoroughly funk-drenched bassline for admirable contrast. 'Turnaround" uses the melodic, alienated menace of post-punk, though Adamson turns the tables by using it in a straight-up love song. "Destination" is pure sonic attack, directly referencing the Stooges "Penetration." On the refrain, however, Adamson throws a change-up: he slips an irresistible pop hook into the refrain and bridge without losing stride. "Looking to Love Somebody" is a shimmering, soulful, 21st century funk driven by harpsichord, rubbery bassline, wah-wah guitars and breaks. "The Sun and the Sea" features layers of guitars but actively suggests Magazine's "Secondhand Daylight." Adamson's Howard Devoto-esque alienated prophet contradicts the song's bright tempo; highlighting the influence further are keyboards in the instrumental interlude. "If You Love Her" unabashedly references Scott Walker's passionate, theatrical croon from Scott 4 with Piero Piccioni-esque production. (Adamson has the vocal chops to pull it off.) The set closes with an even stranger homage: to David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust if it had been produced by David Axelrod. Even with the pop music encyclopedia at his disposal, his songs reflect his signature iconoclasm. With their wildly various, crowded musical architectures, his songs' lyrics address desire and death, and celebrate the spiritual impossibility of living "purely." In Adamson's subjective universe, the standalone "I" may occasionally wish to enter the collective "We" but accepts that it cannot. I Will Set You Free is the sound of Adamson's liberation as a songwriter, producer, and arranger. He feels comfortable in his skin on this wonderfully sequenced collection of songs that makes no attempt to hide his past; if anything, he celebrates it as he moves ever forward.

The only other 2012 release that I am aware of is a benefit single called "Brighton Rockers." Don't have that one, though.

I gave it a listen yesterday. Not bad but not really blown away by it either. There were some interesting moments, but also long stretches where I lost interest. I can see why you would like it and I don't think one listen at low volume via computer speakers could do it justice. I'd put it in the "Worth More Listens" category for now. That's a pretty large group though and who knows how many of those I ever get around to listening to again. If I did stick with it, I could see it growing a bit on me but I could also see it being like most Richard Hawley albums are for me -- a little interesting judged on their own but not something I'd want to listen to much at all.

FWIW, this is the other album I was referring to:

http://www.amazon.com/Dreams-Of-A-Life/dp/B009YU3OYQ

Looks like it is a soundtrack that just came out on Dec. 10th.

My girlfriend picked this up for me in London back in May. I always meant to post it in the 2012 thread but never got around to it. Thought I'd check Spotify now and it's there. I think it's pretty great. Here's the writeup on the packaging by the people at the Rough Trade store:

"A beautiful sad songs album that recalls Richard Hawley in his prime. Yes it's that good. Crybaby make music for grown-ups, music for those amongst us who know that both pain and pleasure can be brutal but temporary, so you should hang onto their red..." [not quite sure what that last line means]

Note that this is a guy from Bristol, not some band from Atlanta.
