Was late to the game on that Dean Owens but have been digging it recently. I like that John Murry but it's fucking dark. Haven't indulged in that mood much this year.

What's the story on that Soul of Spain?

Can't tell from your question whether you are familiar with them but asking about the album or whether you don't know them at all. Anyway, they were a late 90's/early 00's slowcore band lead by Josh Haden (son of Ornette Coleman's bassist Charlie Haden). They broke up in the early 00's but Haden reformed the band a few years back and started doing live shows. This is their first album since 2001.

It's highly rhythmic, melancholic slowcore. I'm a sucker for their sound. If you know and like their early stuff, you should dig this one too. If you're not familiar with them, here's a taste:

Nice. Thanks and no, I had never heard anything about them. Got kind of a Sun Kil Moon vibe.

Marco, don't get me wrong, I liked it but man, that section at the end of "Little Colored Balloons" with his mom's (I'm guessing) phone call recording. About as real as real gets. Although I guess that's what good art should be.

I like that Bill Fay album.

I am interested in giving that Mary Karr & Rodney Crowell album a full listen at some point. I know from sampling it that I won't like all of it, but at least few songs on it seemed great.

As always a great list. Your lists are always relentlessly coherent. The Murry may be the Obner sleeper for a number 1 is there were ever a consolidated lists. Good to see Spain surface again, although some of the tracks seem like offertory music in an Orange County SUV Evangelical church service.

Nice inclusion of the Crowell/Karr. I booked the Midwest and West coast dates of their tour.

Really need to check out that John Murry. Like to see that Andrew Combs on the list too. Mostly because he's still unknown outside of Nashville.

I've been pleasantly surprised by how many lists have had it high after the thread about it was mostly just comments by you, Caputo and myself.

I attended one of the West Coast dates of that tour. That's a bit aggressive ranking of the Andrew Combs based on how late I discovered it but I really like it.

I never saw the show, but read several reviews that were intriguing.

Billy, how do most often listen to music? My listening habits simply don't lend themselves to straight ahead singer/songwriters. For instance, when I hear John Fullbright, I hear his talent, but there is nothing there that resonates in the music to keep my short attention span.

Mostly as background music while driving, cooking or reading. Singer/Songwriter stuff works fine for me for all that. If I'm working out, I need something more upbeat. Strange that you would mention John Fullbright though as several times over the holidays, I had to switch to something else as I found the lead track too abrasive for morning listening.

My tastes have definitely shifted to more mellow music though over the last 5 or so years. We OLG now.

I really need to listen to that Fresh and Onlys. I like every song I have heard by them, but somehow I don't think I have ever got around to listening to a full album.

I don't have it with me and won't get home until late tonight so it sounds like rogneeb is your man. In the meantime though, it is on spotify or at least was last time I checked.

This list is a testament to just how little new music I listened to in 2012. Generally speaking, my tastes align with yours more so than anyone else here, yet Cohen is the only one out of thirty I've heard.

I haven't watched a football game, or even paid attention to anything to do with it, since Saban's bungling water boy was hired at UF, and will not until he's driven back under Nick's skirt.
