Mom and dad cut the trust fund tonight as a sort of "independence day"?

It appears the Sonics may be returning. Sacramento can't seem to get their shit together. I'm not sure how I feel about the whole situation. On one hand, I'd love to see the NBA back in Seattle but I feel for the King's fans. It's not quite the same situation: like Seattle, the Sacto owners and politicians are major fuck-ups. At least the proposed new Seattle ownership group has been up front regarding it's plans and is not lying through their teeth about keeping the team local, gutting the team of it's stars to lower it's value and viewership, then moving the team (like the paper trail clearly showed it had planned all along) before it's arena lease is up.

Oh, and fuck David Stern, Clay Bennett and Howard Schultz. :wavefinger:

If this comes to pass, the Thunder would become the Baltimore Ravens of the NBA, relocationally speaking (even though the "new" Browns were technically an expansion franchise and the "new" Sonics won't be).

Has there ever been a pro sports commissioner that benefited more from timing than Stern? He became commish the same year that Jordan entered the league and one that already has Magic and Bird.

Cut to 30 years later and the NBA has just been surpassed by NASCAR in terms of popularity, half the teams lose money, the gap between the small and big markets has never been bigger, and attendance is in the toilet.

One could argue the globalization of the sport but I've never heard a tangible argument of how that has truly benefited the actual game at home.

NBA TV ratings and attendance are both up in the past several season and NASCAR's ratings, after peaking a few years ago, have been in a steady decline.

Keep in mind that in the years before Stern was commissioner, Finals games were shown on tape delay.

I mean, he (and all commissioners) work for the owners; if he is as bad for the sport as some whiners say, he would have lost his job. But he's not, he makes people money. Ditto the much loathed Roger Gooddell.

Wither the Rochester-Cincinnati Royals-cum-Kansas City-Omaha-Sacramento Kings? Will they just be a scuff mark on Oscar Robertson's wall sconce?

I guess they're really more like the NBA's version of the Philadelphia-Kansas City-Oakland Athletics.

jesus I forgot how terrible Danny was.

With apologies, I'm happy they're staying in Sacto. More than anything, I'm happy that Anaheim isn't getting a basketball team. and that these fucking clowns will no longer be the owners.

Seattle deserves a team. But if you've ever been to Sacramento, you know that place needs SOMETHING.

As I expressed in my full post above, I had mixed feelings about this transaction from the get go. I'm happy for Sacto fans who get to keep their 28 year old team, despite losing my 40 year old team a few years back.

Ironically, David Stern commented yesterday that the relocation committee, headed (unbelievably) by Clay Bennett, "decided that as strong as the Seattle bid was, there's benefit to a city that has supported us for so long". Hmmm. Math must not be his strong suit.

My main issue is with that fucking snake Stern. Obviously, Clay Bennett benefitted from being the Devil incarnate's pal. I guess Chris Hansen and Steve Ballmer and their billions of dollars need to make more influential friends.

Basically, it comes down to 29 rich old white guys + Michael Jordan looking to make as much money for themselves as they possibly can while preserving David Stern's legacy. Fuck them.

I am now convinced that Stern is actually the devil. And I don't believe in the devil. Rot in hell, asshole:

Quote:
At the end of the fight, the old, vindictive NBA commissioner couldn't announce the winner without first needling the city he was about to make a loser again.

At the end of a polarizing relocation issue that he once described as "wrenching," the man who always measures his words couldn't resist one smug remark directed at Seattle.

At the end of another heartbreaking NBA result, David Stern taunted us.

"This is going to be short for me," he told reporters in Dallas on Wednesday. "I have a game to get to in Oklahoma City."

Ouch.

It was a sucker punch followed by a gut punch. First, Stern reminded Seattle that its team is now in Oklahoma City. Then, he announced the NBA was rejecting the city's bid to get a team back."

Seattle lost in the same way that a sparring partner loses to a boxer in training. It wasn't a real fight, just an exhibition for the benefit of one. Hansen really wasn't competing for the Kings. Seattle existed solely to be used to make Sacramento better in the NBA's eyes.

I wonder who is hated more:

Stern in Seattle or Goodell in New Orleans?

I'm guessing Stern in Seattle.
