A friend's wife asked for sitar music that doesn't have tablas. Anyone have any of that? I suggested some kora music.

Any help would be appreciated.

The OR had the radio on during my wife's C-section. My son entered the world to "Don't Stop Believin'"

This is pretty common. That first kid, there are a lot of surprises.

I think mine had on like Cat Power and stuff. I just kept putting on records and making sandwiches and lasagna and smoothies and shit for the midwives.

Yeah, music was the last thing to be considered in the situation room.

I can't remember any music being played during the delivery of either of my kids, but I DO remember that the last thing we watched before they wheeled the First Ex Mrs. FT back to the labor/delivery room was the episode of "Happy Days" where they all went to the dude ranch.

Having been through this twice now, it's hard for me to imagine someone actually having music ready and playing in this situation. Unless you're one of those home birth people.

Maybe like early stages of labor while she's still at home (for the non-home-birthers)? My wife just watched a bunch of shows on the computer/iPad, I think, until it was time to go.

As for sitar music without tablas... some songs on the Ravi Shankar album Improvisations just have regular drums and some hand drums that don't sound like tablas. It's not solo sitar, obviously, if that's what she wants. It also features flute and I think guitar and maybe some other stuff. If you're not already familiar with it, it's a good album, anyway. I think only the tracks "Karnataki" and "Raga Rageshri - Part 3 (Gat)" feature tablas, but they're kinda sneaky things so I may well have missed them in the other tracks.

The first one was too touchy to play anything distracting or amidst dr. and nurses talking. Nothing crazy happened, just a little delay in expectations because the kid fell asleep during the exercise. The 2nd was so fast I don't even think we could have played a Minutmen track.

Phil, I think you're gonna have to make it a live gig for this one.

I may never become pregnant, but if I end up wanting to, I can't imagine myself caring about music during labor. Like, at all.

Not exactly what you're looking for, but maybe check into Harry Manx. He often uses a 20-string Indian slide guitar and fuses ragas with acoustic blues. Album to check out is Dog My Cat from 2001.

my wife agreed with wenchlette. what to listen to during labor was about the last thing on her mind. all i remember is a lot of screaming and blood and panic.
