Does anyone have these recordings. I was just learning about this stuff on NPR. I must get these discs. So bizarre. These are Short Wave Spy Transmissions recorded. It is filled with kids voices reading numbers with music box music in the background. I really just want them to freak people out.

I remember reading somewhere that Tweedy absolutely loved this set, and I think he used to drive the band crazy because he played it.

Irdial's got the whole booklet for Conet Project CDs as a PDF on their website. There's a lengthy essay explaining the numbers stations:

Anyway, after having them on my computer for well over a month...I finally burned disc 1 and listened to it last night. I tried to go for the whole effect, headphones, drowsy, all lights off, etc. It's crazy.

(I now know where the title "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" comes from. Check track 4.)

Anywho, so then I went to bed with my headphones still on, probably around 12:30 or something. And it was alright, I was doing ok with the cd for the most part. But once I laid down and started to drift off (you know that state where you're not really concious, but you're not asleep?). Holy shit. My brain was like making freaky sentences out of the stuff being said. It was just a girl counting, yet I was getting something like "We will save you" plus some more. Idk, it really started to creep me out, and I forced myself to wake up and took off my headphones.

Sleeping was weird, because I was still thinking about it, and I just, idk. The feeling was just different. My brain was thinking all sorts of different things.

Of course, I could just be hyping this for whatever reason...but I'm gonna finish off the cd tonight and see if I get similar results.

That's all.

I listened to that same NPR story, and just the story (not even the discs, which I haven't heard) completely fucked me up.

I also think it's hilarious how the guy who compiled them and I have the same first name.

Which seems kinda silly when they were originally taped off the air, and when Irdial is giving them away for free on their website.

I'm listening to a few of these now based on the above recommendations.

It doesn't really creep me out. Maybe I need to listen to the right ones. Or maybe the entire four discs in one setting.

It does remind me of my best friend's CB radio though. We used to talk to truckers when we were like 10 years old and think how cool we were.

Also, there's this post-industrial band called Dead Voices On Air that put out a few records on Invisible Records in the 90's that sounded like this only much creepier...

I've had these on a 24-hour loop since yesterday. I've figured out the winning lotto numbers and that's real.
