Sick. Has anyone "claimed responsibility" or is this likely a single crackpot?

Not to make light of those injured, but I'm aware of just how nearly impossible it is to actually be able to run in the race. For those who were still running after the explosion, it's got to be heartbreaking too.

That's funny PB

I ran the race today, finished about 15 mins ahead of the bombings. To say I am still coming to terms with it all is an understatement... The Boston Marathon is this huge emotional thing for people, I grew up 90 mins north and always dreamed of running it. To have such huge elation followed by this sickening pit in my stomach is a rollercoaster.

I was walking to the T to try and get home, was probably 8 blocks away, heard two big (what sounded like cannon blasts), and everyone around me all remarked at how odd for cannons in the city, but continued on our way. It was only when they evacuated the entire train station that I knew something had gone horribly wrong.

Save the jokes for another place man

Also, this is my second marathon... I ran the hell out of it, pushed myself way past my comfort zone and literally ran the tank empty. If I had run the same time as my first marathon, I would have been crossing the finish line within a couple minutes of the bombings. Shit like this can mess with your head a little

Boston. F*cking horrible.

I remember, when 9/11 went down, my reaction was, “Well, I’ve had it with humanity.”

But I was wrong. I don’t know what’s going to be revealed to be behind all of this mayhem. One human insect or a poisonous mass of broken sociopaths.

But here’s what I DO know. If it’s one person or a HUNDRED people, that number is not even a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of a percent of the population on this planet. You watch the videos of the carnage and there are people running TOWARDS the destruction to help out. (Thanks FAKE Gallery founder and owner Paul Kozlowski for pointing this out to me). This is a giant planet and we’re lucky to live on it but there are prices and penalties incurred for the daily miracle of existence. One of them is, every once in awhile, the wiring of a tiny sliver of the species gets snarled and they’re pointed towards darkness.

But the vast majority stands against that darkness and, like white blood cells attacking a virus, they dilute and weaken and eventually wash away the evil doers and, more importantly, the damage they wreak. This is beyond religion or creed or nation. We would not be here if humanity were inherently evil. We’d have eaten ourselves alive long ago.

So when you spot violence, or bigotry, or intolerance or fear or just garden-variety misogyny, hatred or ignorance, just look it in the eye and think, “The good outnumber you, and we always will.”

Wife and daughter were right there about 2 hours before. They left for lunch with Neuro / FemNeuro, then came to see me at work. That's when they went off, but I didn't hear about it til right after they left to go home for a nap. When I got home at 6 they were still sleeping and didn't even know.

People are opening up their homes, offering couches, left and right. Runners are staying all over the south end etc. When it happened a lot of them couldn't get into their hotels, and were wearing next to nothing. So they quickly got cold and hungry and had no cell phone (much less service) to call loved ones with whom they'd aranged to meet at a time and place that was no longer possible.

i signed up for my first marathon this year. ran the chicago half last year. all these events are so positive and full of the best of human energy. everyone is encouraged and pushed along, no matter what level of experience or stamina...it's a really eye opening experience to the novice runner, and explains why runners tend to get annoying in facebook feeds. it's kind of a high, on many levels.

that someone would target this kind of thing is really a huge offense, and makes my head spin more than a little.

the patton oswalt thing is thoroughly making the rounds now, but i still agree with it 100%.

I have to say that curmodgeonly though I am, I have seen a few stories that are incredibly emotional. Runners finishing the race and then continuing on to the hospitals to give blood, or that former patriots player who was photographed running to help a lady - she appears to have been with her 3 daughters (?), and one of them was trying to carry her on her back but could barely do it, and then this MASSIVE dude comes running into the video right as it ends. Then there's another photograph clearly taken a few seconds later by someone else that shows him carrying the injured lady in his arms like she's a sack of flour. He didn't say anything about it, and hasn't even confirmed that it's him but it's totally him.

Yeah, they really thought about how this would affect thousands of Americans directly, rather that just a few, or a few hundred, and then the rest of us reading about it in the papers and just kind of not being impacted, you know.

Bastard(s).

This was the picture on the front page of USA Today. Pretty intense. The runner was ok, only a scraped knee, and was able to finish the race.

Doctors are all speaking with the press today and confirming the same thing - intentional shrapnel in the bombs. Headless nails, buckshot, etc., all being pulled from victims' legs.

"Velmahos, of Mass. General, said the lower limbs of some patients treated there were so severe that they were considered “almost automatic amputees,” Velmahos said. In those cases, he said, “we finished what the bomb started.”"

i've seen that old dude in the orange tank in every race i've ever been attended. (figuratively speaking). the lifelong runner whose quiet morning jogs are the highlight of his day, who organizes the community running club in his neighborhood, who passes out water to the kids on the fun run, etc etc

the picture just destroys me

Yeah, weird day. Woke up and was excited about announcing me and my girlfriend's engagement and slightly annoyed at having to work as part of the marathon route intersects the town I deliver mail in. Didn't really care about either of those after hearing the news.

Well I'll be damned. Ol' Shiverhead. Done went and did it.

Prolly deserves it's own thread but somehow this seems appropriate that something good should go in this thread.

Congrats man. Way to get it done. Enjoy this time.

I'm picking through pitcures people are sending me from the midnight bike ride the night before the race, sending them in to a friend on the force. Every year about a thousand cyclists take a midnight commuter train out to the starting line and ride all the way in at like 2am. Wife went this year, and they're interested in seeing shots from the finish line area the in the wee hours that morning. Everybody was so incredibly happy, hoisting their bikes over their heads in front of the grandstand.
