Friday, the new album was mastered. I need to listen through in a few different environments; if all is good, I'll sign the masters off.

I've enjoyed some of his solo stuff and hated others so I'll approach with caution.

I've been heavily anticipating this album since it was first announced a couple of years ago that he was working on it and it would be in the vein of Workbook which made my listmania. Its pretty much an automatic pickup for me, but I'm trying to reign in my expectations because its been a long time since I've really been too happy with anything he's released.

I'm still trying to figure out what happened to my copy of Workbook. I used to love that album. Time to scour.

I take it you mean this is not more electronic "experimentation" like modulate was? I really did not like that at all. If it's not, then I'm there the day this is released.

Sadly, I now have to admit that not only do I not own Workbook, I've never even heard it . . . I need to do something about that.

Oh, and July 26 looks to be the day: http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.a ... usic&Bab=E

I typed out a long response which disappeared into netherland when I hit submit.

An abbreviated version is that Body of Song by all reports is a return to a full band, guitar based rock sound. I meant more than that though in referencing Workbook. Workbook is a very unique album in Mould's catalog in that its mostly acoustic, and is varied stylistically. I think it features his strongest writing and if you haven't heard it, its a must listen. Body of Song was originally scheduled to come out in 2002 and interviews he was giving at that time indicated that the album would harken back to the style of workbook. Its been two years since then and I think the album's undergone alot of changes since then so who knows how much his statements from then are still accurate. I hope so, but I also fear I'm setting myself up for a let down.

I am a big Husker Du fan and an even bigger fan of Mould's first two solo albums, but I could take or leave Sugar and everything he's done since then. Each album has its moments but overall they are a bit too glossy for my taste and the hooks are a bit too predictable.

Mould's supposed to be touring in the fall with a full band in support of the album and playing material from all his albums so that should be cool in any case.

Care to expound on that at all? How does it compare to other Mould releases? How much of a Mould/Husker Du fan are you? eg what internal organs would you be willing to part with before Workbook or Black Sheets of Rain?

Edit: I managed to score a copy, I'll come back later with some thoughts after digesting it.
