been getting into this after finding it as a potential slot-holder for my summer mix. anyone else already know of this (looking at billy g), or can recommend something of a similar ilk (looking at billy g again):

Quote:
Dorothy Ashby (August 6, 1930 — April 13, 1986) was an American jazz harpist and composer.[1]

Along with Alice Coltrane, Ashby extended the popularization of jazz harp past a novelty, showing how the instrument can be utilized seamlessly as much a bebop instrument as the saxophone. Her albums were of the jazz genre, but often moved into R&B, world and other musics, especially on her 1970 album The Rubaiyat of Dorothy Ashby, where she demonstrates her talents on another instrument, the Japanese koto, successfully integrating it into jazz.

I don't like Alice Coltrane and the comparisons to her and the harp always scared me away from her. I'm not sure I've heard the album but I remember when it got reissued Dusty Groove gave it a really glowing write-up so much so that I thought it might have been on their reissue label but I don't think it is. You might want to call over there and ask for recommendations because they know, like it and stock it. I just searched over there and this one seems like the sort of thing you're looking for:

I don't know this album but I do like Prince Lasha.
