I consumed the final two beers from my mix and match six pack before returning to drinking homebrew.
First up,

Lagunitas Undercover Investigation Shut-Down Ale: It's a Barleywine/Strong Ale, and damn near perfect. It's incredibly hoppy, boozy and really packs a punch. I'll have to buy some more before it disappears.

Samuel Adams Longshot Magnificent Seven DIPA: Not my cup of tea. I thought it was poorly balanced and its bitterness failed to compliment the beer as a whole. The only reason you would choose to use seven types of American hops in a beer is to kill someones palate or simply mask the weakness of your malt profile.
Either way, I wouldn't want to drink one again.

I finished the last bottle of my homebrew DIPA (borderline single, only 7.1%) last night, and followed it with a Harpoon Leviathan DIPA. Honestly I enjoyed mine a helluva lot more. Harpoon's is dry and rye-spicey, has 10% ABV and doesn't really hide it well, and the hops just don't have any floral quality to them at all. It's not balanced, it's too bitter without enough corresponding beta acid / late / dry hopping. And the malt backbone, again, is rye-heavy from the taste of it and very dry.

I am thinking I will brew that one again immediately, because in all honesty it was so good (to me) that I just want more of it. I gave 4 of them away to friends, and have heard nothing back, so either nobody tried it yet, or they did and forgot to get back to me, or they did and didn't like it much. A fifth guy had one in my presence, and professed not to like super-hoppy stuff much, but discovered 20 minutes later that he'd sucked down almost the whole thing, and was really surprised / complimentary. -shrug- I just want more of it, now.

I was at the beach (Gulf Shores) last weekend and I must've called a dozen package stores that sold "craft beer" looking for Cigar City Jai Alai but to no avail.

I found one place that carried it in Pensacola but couldn't justify the hour trip (one way).

The Sweetwater IPA worked just fine.

I wouldn't go 2 hours for beer, that's a bit much. Sounds like you put in a great effort though.

I totally forgot to write the name down of the Allagash beer that Derris gave me for my birthday, but I drank it last week and it was really fucking good.

Cheers and thank you sir.

Had another new one last night. Brouwerij West's Dog Ate My Homework

It's a blackberry saison from a local LA area brewery. The picture doesn't do it justice...it's purple in color and even the head is bright pink. They used a full lb of blackberries per liter of beer. It had a strong blackberry flavor without being very sweet and was still crisp and dry like a good saison should be. Fem G usually gives me funny looks when I drink stuff like this but I let her try it and she had to admit that it was really good. I'll definitely being picking up a few more.

I am going to a tapping party for the Zipline Brewing Co. Country White Ale tonight, but Goose Island Sofie Paradisi will also be available in limited quantities.
Goose Island used a different type of wine barrel and Grapefruit peel instead of orange peel for this batch. If it isn't ridiculously expensive, I'll probably have a glass.

The Sophie Paradisi from Goose Island was pretty cheap. They are pretty tight lipped about what wine barrels they are using, but the grapefruit peel was a pretty tasty addition.

I consumed two beers while brewing this morning. I started the day off with a Widmer Hopside Down IPL and then I consumed a New Belgium Rolle Bolle when I was ready for lunch.
I don't usually drink this early on a Sunday, nor do I like to do it when I am brewing at home by myself, but it was nice to have a few sips and watch the Indy 500 as I patiently waited for the wort to chill.

Hit the 5th Anniversary at Toronado San Diego all weekend where they tapped Cable Car, T25 and a slew of other local gems from Alpine, Almanac, Moonlight and so forth. Keene Idea (Double Nelson), Ruination with Citra and Nelson on cask, Societe Apprentice and Pupil, and of course, Pliny and Blind Pig. It was a great time and never crowded because they pretty much kept it a secret.

So these Logsdon beers that BG was talking about... Worth $22 for a 22oz bottle?

I've only had the Seizoen Bretta and it was awesome. I think I paid $18 for a 22oz at a restaurant.

which one?

Kili Wit - Would run you $10.99 for a 750 ml bottle out here. It's a pretty good white beer but nothing mindblowing. I wouldn't recommend you pay $22 for it so No

Seizon - Would run you $11.99 for a 750 ml bottle out here. It's a very good saison but I can't argue that it's worth spending $22 or really working too hard to find. No

Seizon Bretta -Again would only cost $11.99 for a 750 ml bottle here. The use of the Brettamyces yeast though makes a huge difference to me as it makes it crisper, dryer and adds a slight funky complexity. If I could only drink one beer for the rest of my life, I'd chose this. It's overpriced at $22 but if that's the cheapest you can find it for, I'd say go for it. Yes

Cerasus - a Flanders Red made with Kriek cherries grown on the Hood River from trees brought over from Belgium. You won't find this cheeper than $22 anywhere. I actually slightly prefer the Seizon Bretta but this is really nice and worth the $22 Yes

Fresh Hop Seizon - retails for $15.99 here. Its harder to find and I've never had it. ?

Peche and Brett - retails for $22.99 here. It's the Seizon Bretta with Peaches added. Dying to try but its a seasonal release and I haven't been able to find it. ? is probably the right answer since I haven't tried it but I suspect that it's great so Yes

Far West Vlaming - a flemish red ale that retails for $20 out here. I like it and think its worth that but it's not as good as either the Seizon Bretta or the Cerasus. Probably won't blow your mind. Still Why Not ?

Oak Aged Seizon Bretta - The Seizon Bretta aged in oak barrels. It runs $15.99 here. I have a bottle at home but haven't tried it yet. No idea whether I'd expect the oak to improve or detract from it so ?

I have pics. One was an oak aged bretta. Found the normal saison bretta just now for under $10, snagged it. Excited.

I'm kind of baffled by Firestone Walker being included in that list. They are already pretty huge and well known amongst beer geeks.
I was glad they mentioned Crooked Stave from Colorado, and I'd be a truly happy man if they started distributing their products here like Funkwerks did recently.
I've only had Hommel Ale from Perennial Artisan Ales and Black Metal Farmhouse Imperial Stout from Jester King, both were good, but I think Jester King is on the cusp of being the next Three Floyds style brewery if they haven't reached that level already.

It's not the main Firestone Walker brewery that they included. It's Firestone's Barrelworks facility in Buellton which just opened in January of this year which will specialize in wild ales and barrel-aged beers, not any of the core products that Firestone Walker is known for. I've never had anything from there yet. I don't think any of it is distributed yet.

Edit: Well, maybe they are doing some of the barrel-aged stuff there like Sucaba and Parabola that has always been around (would make sense if they moved that to Buellton) but I think the primary motivation in building the facility so that they can do a lot of things that they were only tinkering in the past on a very small scale like wild ales and other newer or smaller scale barrel-aged beers.

I love that list! Societe, Prairie, Crux, Westbrook are all breweries that will blow up soon. Thai Me Up has those impressive GABF medals to their credit and I'll be hitting them up over the holidays.

I think it is cool that they are expanding that part of the repertoire, I just think it is a little odd to list it as a separate entity in a beer list. You don't normally separate the regular line products from what a brewery like Goose Island or Boulevard do from their artisan line when you rate the brewery as a whole, and it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to do it with Firestone Walker when so many of their beers are already considered to be World Class.

Chad will be distributing in Oregon and California soon and NYC in a really cool distribution agreement that will bring Evil Twin to Colorado. Hopefully we'll start to see more partnerships like this pop up:
Quote:
Crooked Stave Artisan Beer Project has struck up a partnership with a specialty importer in New York City that will allow the Denver brewery to sell its beers there while Crooked Stave will distribute some rare and unique beers in the Denver area.

The distributor, Brooklyn's 12 Percent Imports, is focused on bringing a handful of boutique Belgian beers into the United States, but it also handles distribution in New York City for a limited number of small or unusual U.S. breweries.
"We're coming together at a time when we're both ready to expand slightly, and he's exactly the kind of person we want to partner with," says 12 Percent's Brian Ewing.

Beginning next month, 12 Percent will send beers to Colorado from: Evil Twin, a "gypsy" brewing company that started in Denmark and is now in New York; Stillwater Artisan Ales, a renowned Baltimore-based gypsy brewery that is focused on Belgian-style and sour ales; Brouwerij Hof Ten Dormaal, a very small farmhouse brewery in rural Belgium; and Gueuzerie Tilquin, a new Belgian brewery that makes lambics.

Crooked Stave owner Chad Yakobson, who formed his distributorship in Colorado to handle his beers and 12 Percent's, will be the only company to have them here; none of 12 Percent's breweries has sold beer in Colorado before.

Ewing and Yakobson met last year at a beer festival on the East Coast, but they had known about each other for some time, Ewing says. "Here was this young, up-and-coming brewer doing amazing stuff in Colorado and we had his beers at our beer-geek tastings. The artisanal beer world is small. It seemed like a natural connection."

Yakobson recently added capacitt at his barrel cellar in Denver and plans to distribute beer to some select markets in Oregon, California and elsewhere, in addition to New York; he says he's looking forward to the partnership with 12 Percent.

He's also looking forward to bringing new and different beers to Colorado, something that Ewing says he's wanted to do for a long time.

"Chad is going to put our beer in the hands of people who are excited about it," Ewing adds. "We will start small, but with a meaningful enough amount of beer so that the people who want it will be able to get it. We're very excited about it."
