So, that Thinline Tele that I was supposed to get in May... June... August... October...
Still isn't in yet.
Now they tell me that it should be in my hot little hands by the end of the month.
And, in order to apologize for all the trouble, they are going to give me a pickup upgrade.
So which do I want in my '69 Thinline reissue:

The Vintage Noiseless:
http://www.fender.com/accessories/picku ... -set-of-2/
or
Or the Custom Shop Nocasters:
http://www.fender.com/accessories/picku ... -set-of-2/

Which would y'all pick to get the classic Tele sound out of a 69 Thinline reissue?
Okay friends... help me out!

From what I can tell, the Noiseless pickups sound a lot like a strat. The Nocasters sound really good, but they don't quack and squeak quite to the degree some Fralins would. If you're limited to just Fender pickups (by the shop or perhaps by your own volition) I would recommend away from the noiseless ones. So for a traditional Tele sounding bridge pickup that still works well with some distortion, the Nocaster is it from fender. If you wanna push things a little into the Country corner and are willing to have something that can't really handle anything over medium overdrive without turning soupy, I cannot recommend the Broadcaster set highly enough. I have the Broadcaster bridge in my 3-pickup '97 Special, and that sonofabitch is convincing at country in a way that makes stock pickups embarassed. Flat, quacky, and brighter, but in a very fragile and beautiful way, though. Not an ice pick, but a subtle old country lead tone.

And then there's the other end of the spectrum, the full-on-rock Texas Specials. Those almost cannot pull off country - they just sound like Zep I.

You have to realize who they were trying to please with each set, and then it all makes sense. Noiseless and standard pickups are meant to handle some distortion, and to not be too trebly, and basically to sound a lot like a strat... ie, for people who either play everything, or don't really know what they're going to play (first or second guitar buyers, in other words). Texas Specials are for people who play 99% of the time with some kind of distortion on. Nocasters are for guys who don't want that Strat sound in their tele. Broadcasters are meant for guys who play old country and never plug into a marshall.

If you aren't limited to just Fender pickups, I say go Fralin.

Limited to Fender, I'm afraid. They're the ones supplying them.
And, I did not see any Broadcaster pickups offered at the Fender site. Are the Nocasters the same thing?

Plus, as this is my second electric, and I do play more than just country, and with distortion sometimes, too, are the Vintage Noiseless close enough to that vintage Tele sound to satisfy me while still handling what I need, or should I still lean toward that Broadcaster/Nocaster if that's what they got?

Snipe this auction and have them install them for you and then give you the balance of the credit in strings.

Anywhere from slightly overdriven, to My Bloody Valentine.
Of course, I would use my Strat (with a Chandler Hot Rails in the bridge) for the crazy disto. The Tele would be used for more of the cleaner-type and slightly overdriven stuff, but I still like to push it a little every now and then. Maybe get that Tele punch to cut through the distortion when I can. Like, say, Quine.

The store is installing the new ones for me for nothing and it's costing them nothing to get me the pickups -- just Fender, who is the one that is at fault here.
But yeah, I can't really spend any extra money right now, as tempting as those Fralins are.

Nocasters, then. Given that you HAVE a strat, you want to maximize this guitar's differences. The Nocasters will offer you more of a difference in sound, and they can take a little fuzz without falling to pieces. Just don't ask them to pull off heavy chunky chord riffs.

And I guess they aren't making the Broadcaster pickups anymore...? It was already in my tele when I bought it used.

Taking my son to his violin lesson at the shop tonight. I'm gonna talk to the owner then about the pickups and see if he has any guitars in stock with each of the pickups in them, so I can check 'em out.
I really appreciate all y'all's input. I respect the hell out of all of you and it's great to get your opinions and thoughts!

The '69 RI.
Decided that I wanted my Tele to be a Tele and not a Gretsch, as pretty (and gaudy) as it was.

Reading more reviews on the pickups, it sounds like the Nocasters are pulling into the lead.
Leaning more and more that way.

Man, that guy and Pickguardian's websites BLOW. Especially the latter. I just want to hold an intervention.

Curtis would give you a 10,000 word diatribe about how he is part artist, part engineer and that the website doesn't matter, its the product he puts in your hand. He's that guy.

Ok. And the pickups are the better for it, but using a shitty website is just pointless waste. And waste sucks. His site is decent compared to Pickguardian's. That shit... needs help.
