I would be the exact opposite.....I think fart jokes are the realm of the dumb, and we instituted a "no potty talk unless you have to use the potty" rule pretty much about the time the first on could say "poo poo" -- it's not a shaming thing, it's more of a class thing.

I signed in just to applaud you, senator. I've always found this behavior a little sophomoric* and distasteful. Of course I grew up in a repressive catholic household.

It was a little hard to reign in with my kids due to the fact that their grandfather was a world famous gastroenterologist and well...it was pretty much dinner table talk.

*this does not mean that I never indulge in sophomoric behavior as indicated by my car trunk full of fireworks.

It is strongly discouraged pretty much all the time now, but there's too much of my dad and his family in her to eradicate it entirely. Better to have a funny explanation for it, and then minimize / educate about manners. It's gone WAY down, which was the goal, so ... (pats self on the back). Progress.

My wife, SiL, dog and I all launch farts. We're fucking humans (yes, my dog is a human). Although, I've cut down my farts by - seriously - 99% by taking gluten and yeast out of my diet the last week.

In all seriousness, do you think something like a trip to Dachau would get through to him? I try not to underestimate young mens' abilities to shrug and roll their eyes past just about anything, but having been there my self once, it was something you just cannot make jokes about once you've seen it. Not that I did before hand, but still. You think you understand it, but there's more. A lot more.

Yeah, we went to the Holocaust museum. It's designed to hit all your sensory buttons as well as tell the facts, and like most autistic people Jared's very touchy on the sensory buttons so it kind of knocked him out. Spent a lot of time talking about how Hitler would have wanted to kill him (disabled!) and most of the folks he likes, from the JW's all in his dead mom's family, to his ethnically if not practicing Jewish best pal, to all those college experimenters. (Fun museum fact: after the war, the allies liberated the camps and sent gay men back to prison, because they were after all still criminals). We read Maus. We lectured. We withdrew privileges on a scale he had never expected, as he viewed the incident as nothing more than being loud and flippant in class, as ever.

It seems like he had WWII in his head as a superhero Christians versus Jews story, and figured he's got one grandfather a preacher, the other a deacon, and he used to watch veggie tales so if it's time to pick a side he knows where he stands... Imagine the joy of being a 7th grade teacher and having a disabled kid blurt out that he guessed Hitler had to kill the Jews, because he was a Christian! Imagine further the joy of being a 7th grade parent of a Jewish child who comes home and tells you this story. Ugh.
