Hello Obner, I will tell you why I'm here. I went out with some high school friends and because of the reminiscing this board has poped into my head. This may or may not be a good idea but why not and because I'm a little drunk (wild week as my boss quit on me yesterday):

Ballot part one (mandatory): Your Top 20 Steely Dan tracks (Top 20 or less). Please order your list with your #1 at the top and #20 at the bottom, no need to number them. Scoring will be as follows: 1:40, 2:36, 3:33, 4:30, 5:28, 6:26, 7:25, 8:24, 9:23, 10:22, 11:21, 12:20, 13:19, 14:18, 15:17, 16:16, 17:15, 18:14, 19:13, 20:12

Ballot part two (optional): Your Top 10 Steely Dan and/or Solo albums (Top 10 or less). If you only want to rank the first seven Steely Dan then that is fine or you can rank The Nightfly above the whole lot.

Send ballots to steelydanpoll AT gmail dot com. Please include your Obner user name (and/or older name if it changed please).

Deadline for voting will be Sunday Midnight Pacific on March 30, 2014. Live rollout will start after work on April 2, with the Top songs roll out starting the 3rd standard business times and should end Friday night.

yes, I created that gmail account and yes this is REAL.

It's only Bob and I that are fans of the Dan as far as I remember.

I might actually do this for a half hour break from staring into the existentialist void.

Don't know them quite well-enough to give you an extensive list. But I can certainly give you my #1 song:
"Peg"

No doubt there.

My list is unapologetically hit heavy. A lot of tough decisions. A lot of really good songs ended up 21-28. Sent to the gmail.

Yeah I could maybe do a Top 10 songs, at best. And I could rank their albums up through Gaucho.

Kinda silly that this exercise presumes superfan obsessiveness. Make it accessible to casual fans, and you might get some participation.

I dunno. 20 seemed pretty easy to me. Granted, I'm pretty familiar with their pre-81 catalog, but Steely Dan has at least 10 bona fide top 40 hits, and a bunch of other well known songs that charted.

The fact that we only have 7 of 20 songs in common (see below), and our albums rankings are almost diametrically opposed speaks to the pure brilliance of The Dan, in my opinion. There really is something for everyone.

Show Biz Kids
The Fez
Black Cow
Haitian Divorce
My Old School
Bodhisattva
Black Friday

can't believe i actually did this last night, well i can't take it back now and was pretty drunk (it has been a crazy week). so i opened the polling for a few days so you can mull over your order.

to paraphrase and no offense to people who don't like this band: if you are under 21 and into Steely Dan then you have no balls. if you are over 30 and don't love Steely Dan then you have no brain. that pretty much sums it up for me. when i was posting on this board, back in the day, i knew of them but didn't know them. i used BMG Music Club to buy all their albums. now days i think they are about the best thing ever. The Cure will always be my all-time favorite band as that is embedded into my fiber. Dan has so many five-star songs that it's sort of ridiculous. anyways, major fan and thus one of the reason why i picked them.

i will send out confirmation emails to people who do send in ballots. will count the lists in this thread but email is preferred, mainly so people are kept in the dark.

The end of a perfect day
Distant lights from across the bay

I got an astonishing, jaw dropping 77 ballots for this thing. Obner/Facebook/lurker vote is where you came in.

Steely Dan is such an amazing band that I wanted to share this with you. So even if you only care a bit for them or love them I think, as F T said, there is something for everybody. Who knows maybe you will be a fan after this.

I had some other subpolls going on but you can scroll to the end for the live updates.
